WARREN -- Letters of commendation will be given to two Trumbull County deputies who helped rescue two women in a traffic crash on Interstate 71.
Detectives Peter Pizzulo and Anthony Leshnack pulled two women from a van moments before it exploded about 1 p.m. Wednesday.
"Our detectives were on their way to pick up a prisoner at the Mansfield Correctional Institution," said Ernie Cook, chief of operations for the sheriff's department.
Cook said the two men came upon the crash scene and learned that the women were trapped in the van.
"They were able to get both women out and saved their lives," he said.
Car crash kills woman
CHAMPION -- A one-car crash killed a 36-year-old Liberty Township woman and sent her 2-month-old son to a hospital.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said MeHan Lee of Monticello Boulevard was eastbound on state Route 5 about 9 a.m. Wednesday when her vehicle went off the road and hit a guardrail.
She died in a Youngstown hospital.
Her son, Jeffrey L. Jiang, was flown to Akron Children's Hospital, where he was in stable condition this morning.
Financial forecast resultswill determine layoffs
NEWTON FALLS -- The outcome of a five-year financial forecast will determine if the school district will lay off workers and make other cuts.
The forecast, required by the state of all school districts, is under review and will eventually be presented to the board of education for approval and submission to the state.
The tentative plan calls for laying off 14 teachers and up to eight classified employees.
Earlier plans predicted a $30,000 surplus at the end of this year, down from a $600,000 carryover at the end of the 2001-02 school year.
Recounting levy ballots
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Board of Elections will recount ballots for a 2-mill Bristol fire levy that passed by only three votes election night.
The ballots will be recounted by machine at 10 a.m. May 28.
Wednesday, the board certified all other May 6 primary results.
Preparing officers' test
WARREN -- The civil service commission voted Wednesday to prepare a test for entry-level police officers.
The decision came at the request of Fred Harris, safety-service director.
The commission clerk, Jodi Fridley, resigned, effective June 21.
Dinner to aid cop's family
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dubic's Palm Cafe, 301 Steel St., will have a spaghetti dinner May 29, the proceeds going to the family of Patrolman Michael T. Hartzell, who was shot and killed April 29.
Tickets are $5 at the door beginning at 5 p.m.
Girard High School plansannual Civic Day event
GIRARD -- The high school's annual Civic Day is Friday.
A mock school board meeting will be at 8 a.m. with students serving as board members.
During the day, students will also conduct a mock city council meeting and court hearing.
Freshmen ran for school board positions and juniors and seniors for city positions during their own May 6 primary election.
On port authority board
VIENNA -- William Reali, a certified public accountant and principal of Reali, Giampetro & amp; Scott accounting firm in Canfield, has been named chairman of the Western Reserve Port Authority board, which operates Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport.
Marty Solomon was named vice chairman; William Kelly, treasurer and Michael Harshman, secretary.
