GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Hempfield Township police said Kevin R. Walters, 22, of Crestview Drive, Transfer, was seriously injured when his motorcycle slammed head-on into a pickup truck on Pa. Route 58 two miles south of the borough.
Witnesses said Walters was traveling at a high rate of speed moments before the crash. The speedometer on his motorcycle was frozen at 95 mph after the accident, police said.
Walters, whom police said was driving under license suspension, was southbound on Route 58 at 11:05 p.m. Monday when his motorcycle went left of center on a curve and hit a northbound pickup driven by Lee Wright of Sequoia Drive, Mercer.
Wright wasn't hurt, but Walters was thrown 195 feet by the impact and suffered multiple fractures and head injuries as well as a traumatic leg amputation, police said.
He was in critical condition today at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Funds appropriated
SALEM -- City council appropriated $2,394,180 from the capital improvements fund, including $400,000 for a firetruck.
Councilwoman Mary Lou Popa said the balance of the money will be used for engineering and other work related to street projects on Cunningham Road and Third Street.
Council also agreed to apply for Community Development Block Grants for small cities. She said the council has no specific plans yet if CDBG funds are approved.
Warned about violation
SALEM -- Some city residents anxious for the citywide cleanup day could find their wallets a little lighter.
Councilwoman Mary Lou Popa said many residents have begun cleaning out garages and other areas of their homes, placing the large items at the curb.
Popa warned against the practice and said if the items aren't removed, residents will be fined for violating city ordinances.
Council agreed Tuesday that the annual cleanup day, when residents can place large, unwanted items out for pickup, will happen, but not until sometime in June. She said council will announce the date as soon as it's scheduled, and list what items are acceptable for pickup.
