LEAVITTSBURG -- A mother and son will be in court next week to answer several charges.
Police were called Monday to a Hobart Road residence, where Randy Dye, 20, of Orris Road, was accused of beating up his 17-year-old cousin.
Warren Township Lt. Don Bishop said Dye was gone when officers arrived, but he returned while police were taking statements.
Dye's mother, Harriet, 36, also of Orris, got into the car with her son and they drove off. Police followed.
The pursuit lasted only a few minutes. The mother and son drove into Champion and then back to the Hobart residence.
Police said that during the arrest, Harriet Dye struck an officer and Randy Dye bit the hand of an officer, who had to get a tetanus shot.
Randy Dye was charged with felonious assault, domestic violence and obstruction. He pleaded innocent to the felony charge Tuesday and his bond was set at $2,500. He is to return to court at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
His mother has pleaded innocent to felonious assault and obstruction. She will return to court at 1:30 p.m. May 30.
Mathews school board
VIENNA -- Mathews Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. Thursday instead of the regularly scheduled meeting at 6 p.m. today.
The Thursday meeting, which will be in the board office at 4434-B Warren-Sharon Road, will begin with an executive session, with regular business to follow.
Brookfield house burns
BROOKFIELD -- A faulty outlet in the basement is being blamed for a $20,000 fire Tuesday night.
Firefighters were called to the Greg Meade home at 675 Syme St. about 9:45. Flames were confined to the basement, though smoke filled the house.
The family was not home.
Brookfield traffic patrols
BROOKFIELD -- Township police are conducting extra patrols through Monday.
They are targeting speed and seat-belt violators during the Memorial Day weekend.
Schoolhouse Museum
LORDSTOWN -- The Schoolhouse Museum, operated by Lordstown Historical Society, will be open Monday after a Memorial Day service.
On display will be record books from Lordstown Township dating back to 1884, as well as attendance records from a one-room schoolhouse dated from 1883.

Expired license turned in
YOUNGSTOWN -- After a crash Tuesday on Belmont Avenue, Margaret M. Stevens, 53, of Warren-Sharon Road, Vienna, handed over her driver's license, which expired in October 1998, police said.
Stevens was issued a citation charging her with not maintaining assured clear distance and driving without a valid license.
Her car was to be turned over to a licensed driver.
Jackson traffic patrols
NORTH JACKSON -- Jackson Township police will be out Sunday through next Saturday enforcing traffic laws.
Police will be on the lookout for speed violations, alcohol-related offenses, child safety restraints and seat-belt use as part of Operation Safe Streets.
Charged with rape
SHARON, Pa. -- Police have charged Phillip B. Johnston, 52, of Pine Hollow Boulevard, Hermitage, with rape, indecent assault, indecent exposure and making terroristic threats in the assault of a Sharpsville woman last July.
The woman did not report the episode until May 15. Johnston was arrested around 5 p.m. Tuesday and held overnight for arraignment.
Sidewalk sale?
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two men seen hoisting sections of slate sidewalk into the bed of a pickup truck on Forest Avenue Tuesday evening were charged with theft.
Police said Raymond Sadler, 42, of Brownlee Avenue and Earl Hargrove, 52, of West Evergreen Avenue told them a woman "down the street" gave them permission to take the sidewalk.
Warned about violation
SALEM -- Councilwoman Mary Lou Popa said residents have begun putting junk at the curb, even though the date of the June cleanup has not been announced.
Popa warned that if the items aren't removed, residents will be fined.
