NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police Troop D will conduct a child car seat check from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Tender Care Learning Center, 2002 Wilmington Road.
Certified child car seat technicians will be available to assist parents in properly installing child car seats. Parents are encouraged to have their child or children with them along with the car seat and vehicle owner's manual.

Motorcyclist hurt
MERCER, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said Eric Sobel, 21, of South Orange, N.J., was injured when he rode his motorcycle into the back of a slower-moving pickup truck on Interstate 80 in Findley Township.
Sobel rolled about 50 feet along the highway after his cycle hit the westbound truck around 1:30 p.m. Monday, police said. He was taken to United Community Hospital and then transferred to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. A report on his condition was unavailable this morning. Police said the truck driver wasn't hurt.
Findley Twp. jail date
MERCER, Pa. -- The Mercer County Prison Board announced that contract awards for the new county jail in Findley Township will be made June 26 to be followed by a groundbreaking ceremony the same day. In other business Monday, the board fired William Fabrey, a part-time house-arrest officer. Officials declined to reveal why he was fired.
Farrell man sentenced
PITTSBURGH -- A Farrell man will spend 12 years and seven months in federal prison for violating federal drug laws.
Colbert Thompson, 29, of Union Street, had been accused of selling nearly an ounce of cocaine March 13, 2001, says information presented in court by Michael A. Comber, assistant United States attorney.
Sean J. McLaughlin, United States District judge, imposed the sentence on Thompson on Monday, telling him that he was sentenced as a career offender based on the fact that he has had a record of significant criminal activity since he was 17.
The prison term will be followed by three years of probation.
Sharon police, Pennsylvania State Police, the FBI and the Internal Revenue Service were involved in the investigation.
Deer smashes windows
LISBON -- A wayward deer leaped through the window of a business and smashed several more windows before leaving the way it came, police said.
Police were called to Heim Sheet Metal Inc., 525 E. Chestnut St., about 8:50 p.m. Monday after someone spotted the deer and saw it jump into the window of the shop, which was closed for the day.
No damage estimate was available. Blood found on the scene indicated the deer injured itself before escaping through the window it originally entered, police said.
Pop machine break-ins
SALEM -- Outdoor soda machines at two businesses were broken into, police said.
One of the machines was at Mario's Pizza, 709 E. Third St.; the other was at Salem Oil, 445 Prospect St.
The amount of money taken from the machines has not been determined, police said.
Both crimes were reported before 1 a.m. today.
Route 518 road work
SALEM -- Crews are set this week to begin surface repairs on a nearly 8-mile section of state Route 518 in Madison and Wayne townships.
The work will be performed on the road from near its intersection with state Route 45 to just west of Steubenville Pike Road.
The estimated project cost is $99,000. Lyle Construction Inc., Wooster, is doing the work, which is to be completed by June 30. Traffic will be maintained.
