Open enrollment adds 89 students

The board says the district has room for 41 more.
McDONALD -- The village school board has reopened open enrollment for students.
The open enrollment, which had ended May 1, was reopened because the district has room for more students.
The students coming into the district make up for enrollment that's been declining the past three or four years; enrollment is 792 and it was about 855 three years ago, according to schools Treasurer Thomas Radabaugh.
He said the district has signed up 89 new students for open enrollment and has room for about 41 more. The 89 come from 12 school districts in Trumbull County, and a few from Mahoning County. The farthest district is South Range, Radabaugh said.
The school board has set a maximum of 70 students for grades K to 6 and two grades, first and third, have met that limit. For grades 7 to 12, the district will accept up to 75 open-enrollment students per grade.
Waiting list
Radabaugh said the district will create a waiting list on a first-come, first-serve basis when grade-levels reach the maximum. Any students signed up for open enrollment who decide not to come will be replaced by applicants on the new list.
The 89 new students mean an estimated $400,000 in revenue for the school district, Radabaugh said. He said that's the equivalent of 8 mills of real estate tax.
In other business at the board's regular meeting Monday, donations were accepted for the Blue Devil Room weight room, including $3,000 from John and Elizabeth Schimko and $500 from the McDonald Basketball Association.
To date, $25,000 has been donated for the weight room.
