YOUNGSTOWN -- Two men seen hoisting sections of slate sidewalk into the bed of a pickup truck on Forest Avenue on Tuesday were charged with theft.
Police said Raymond Sadler, 42, of Brownlee Avenue, and Earl Hargrove, 52, of West Evergreen Avenue, told them a woman "down the street" gave them permission to take the sidewalk. The officers told the men that the sidewalk is city property. The pickup truck, which contained numerous pieces of the slate, was towed and held for detectives.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Stephen Grieco and Brian Ferguson were issued littering citations Tuesday after Patrolman Mike Anderson, a member of the Street Crimes Unit, saw them dumping trash on Bridge Street from their car. Anderson ordered Grieco, 22, of Pike Street, and Ferguson, 24, of West Heights Avenue, to pick up the trash they had dumped before releasing them.
Jackson traffic patrols
NORTH JACKSON -- Jackson Township police will be out Sunday through next Saturday enforcing traffic laws.
Police will be on the lookout for speed violations, alcohol-related offenses, child safety restraints and seat-belt use as part of Operation Safe Streets.
Boys steal bicycle
BOARDMAN -- Police are investigating the robbery of a 9-year-old bicyclist here Monday night. The boy was riding his Mongoose bicycle, worth about $250, in the area of New England Boulevard and Montrose Avenue when he was followed by a group of six boys on five bikes. One of the boys pushed the 9-year-old off his bike and rode off on it. Police said the boys in the group are believed to be between ages 10 and 12.
Car injures boy
BOARDMAN -- A township woman told police her 11-year-old son was intentionally struck by a car at the corner of Indianola Road and Market Street. Police are not sure why the driver of the silver Chevrolet Chevette hit the boy. Officers have a license plate number and description of the car and are investigating. The boy received a bruised left knee and swelling to his shin.
Burglars take firearms
YOUNGSTOWN -- A rifle, shotgun and handgun were among the items reported stolen Tuesday evening from a burglary in the 1700 block of Atkinson Avenue. Police determined that the burglar had pried open the rear kitchen door to get in, damaging the wooden frame. A VCR, satellite receiver and DVD player were also stolen, the victim told police.
Police levy to go on ballot
LAKE MILTON -- Milton Township trustees approved the placement Tuesday of a new 2-mill continuing police levy on the November ballot. The money would be used for operating equipment, salaries, police vehicle maintenance and other purposes.
The levy is expected to generate about $97,000 for the department annually, said police Capt. Frank Tomaino. He said cost would be $33 per year for a taxpayer living in a home with a valuation of $50,000.
Expired license turned in
YOUNGSTOWN -- After a crash Tuesday on Belmont Avenue, Margaret M. Stevens, 53, of Warren-Sharon Road, Vienna, handed over her driver's license, which expired in October 1998, police said.
Stevens was issued a citation charging her with not maintaining assured clear distance and driving without a valid license.
Her car was to be turned over to a licensed driver.
Brookfield traffic patrols
BROOKFIELD -- Township police are conducting extra patrols through Monday.
They are targeting speed and seat-belt violators during the Memorial Day weekend.
Schoolhouse Museum
LORDSTOWN -- The Schoolhouse Museum, operated by Lordstown Historical Society, will be open Monday after a Memorial Day service.
On display will be record books from Lordstown Township dating back to 1884, as well as attendance records from a one-room schoolhouse dated from 1883.

Mathews school board
VIENNA -- Mathews Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. Thursday instead of the regularly scheduled meeting at 6 p.m. today.
The Thursday meeting, which will be in the board office at 4434-B Warren-Sharon Road, will begin with an executive session, with regular business to follow.
