GIRARD -- City police are conducting a traffic enforcement blitz until June 1.
Officers will focus on the use of safety restraints. Citations will be issued between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. to motorists who are stopped for traffic violations and are not wearing seat belts.
3-day mosquito spraying
HOWLAND -- Weather permitting, the township will be sprayed for mosquitos today, Wednesday and Thursday, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Residents are asked to close windows and keep pets and food indoors.
Meeting at McMenamy'sabout mercury storage
NILES -- A public hearing on the future of the Defense National Stockpile Center mercury storage facility in Weathersfield Township will be at 6 p.m. Thursday in McMenamy's on U.S. Route 422.
A recently-completed study by DNSC officials recommends consolidating mercury from four stockpiles at one location, yet to be chosen. Alternatives considered are selling off the mercury and doing nothing.
After the presentation, public comment will be taken.
Library funding discussion
WARREN -- State Sen. Marc Dann, D-32nd, will discuss public funding for Ohio libraries at the main branch of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library 11 a.m. May 31.
Libraries are bracing for a cut in funding in the new state budget.
$5 car wash Saturday
GIRARD -- The St. Rose School seventh- and eighth-graders will have a car wash fund-raiser Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the school parking lot.
Cost is $5. Proceeds will help pay for liturgical items.
Family donation preservesand protects farmland
NEWTON FALLS -- George and Ruth Sharec have donated an agricultural easement to the Ohio Department of Agriculture that will preserve their 169-acre farm forever.
An agricultural easement is a voluntary legal agreement restricting nonagricultural development on farmland, with the land remaining on the tax rolls under private ownership and management.
If the land is sold or given as a gift, the restrictions remain.
The Sharecs raise beef cattle and grow corn, wheat and hay on their no-till farm.
It is the family's second such move. In September, Ruth Sharec donated an 80-acre easement from another farm she owns.

YSU receives donation,will renovate Bliss Hall
YOUNGSTOWN -- The state Controlling Board has awarded $168,000 to Youngstown State University to help pay for renovations at Bliss Hall.
The funds will be used for the building's ongoing renovation project, which includes the construction of advanced painting and sculpture studios, a ceramics studio including kilns, a foundry including overhead cranes, a wood workshop, a computer laboratory, offices, a warehouse, an outdoor sculpture court, an elevator, laboratory preparation rooms, tool storage rooms and restrooms.
Fingerhut plans speech
POLAND -- State Sen. Eric Fingerhut, the only announced Democratic candidate for the 2004 U.S. Senate race, will speak to the Democrats of the 17th and 6th Districts at 7 p.m. Thursday in Bruno's Restaurant on U.S. Route 224.
Fingerhut, of Cleveland, plans to run next year for the seat held by U.S. Sen. George Voinovich, a Republican. The meeting is open to the public.
Deer jumps into shop
LISBON -- Police were called to Heim Sheet Metal Inc. on Chestnut Street about 8:50 p.m. Monday after someone saw a deer jump through a window of the shop, which was closed for the day. The deer broke several windows before escaping.
