South Range board OKs procedures for schooling pupils with disabilities

NORTH LIMA -- The South Range school board has adopted procedures for educating children with disabilities.
The resolution, adopted at the school board's monthly meeting Monday, brings the school district into compliance with state standards as well as state and federal laws.
The state education department published three versions of its model procedures and required school districts to adopt one of these three versions or develop its own model procedures. Those procedures must be submitted to the state by May 30.
Basically, the procedures outline how school districts should address and provide educational opportunities to children with disabilities. For example, procedures call for school districts to identify children who need early intervention and to provide individualized learning programs for children with disabilities. Among other criteria, the school district must also properly notify parents in advance of the school's intention to place the child in a specific program.
In other business at its meeting Monday, the school board adopted a resolution congratulating the Greenford Library on 50 years of service to the community. The board also adopted a resolution thanking area residents for passing the renewal levy earlier this month.
