DENVER -- Clint Mathis scored the winning goal past the outstretched arms of diving goalkeeper Scott Garlick, leading the MetroStars to a 2-0 victory over winless Colorado on Saturday.
It was Mathis' third goal in three games. Mathis, the second-leading scorer in franchise history, is one goal shy of his total for all of 2002, when he was limited to 14 games by a knee injury and by playing in the World Cup.
Mathis, who also assisted on Mike Magee's goal, has scored in three consecutive games for the MetroStars (4-1-1). The Rapids (0-4-1) were shut out for the second consecutive game.

FOXBORO, Mass. -- Taylor Twellman scored his fifth goal of the season, and Adin Brown made seven saves for New England.
Taylor Twellman opened the scoring for New England (3-2-2) in the 18th minute, heading in the rebound of a shot by Joe-Max Moore.
Jay Heaps and Steve Ralston also scored.
Wizards 1, United 1, tie
WASHINGTON -- Marco Etcheverry's ended D.C. United's scoreless streak at 313 minutes as the Washington club tied Kansas City in rainy conditions.
D.C. United (0-2-4) missed on several scoring opportunities in the first 20 minutes before Etcheverry tied it on a penalty kick in the 31st minute. The goal was United's first since Etcheverry scored in the seventh minute at Colorado on April 26.
Preki, tied for the MLS scoring lead, opened the scoring in the sixth minute with his third goal of the season.
WUSA
WASHINGTON -- Danielle Fotopoulos had two goals and three assists, leading Carolina to a 5-2 victory over Washington as the Courage won their first game of the WUSA season.
Washington (4-1-1, 13 points) played without goalkeeper Siri Mullinix and forwards Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach, who were helping Team USA to a 6-0 victory over England at Birmingham, Ala., where Hamm contributed a goal and an assist.
Freedom backup goalie Erin Regan, who signed March 31 as a developmental player, made her first WUSA start in place of Mullinix. She and allowed five goals on eight shots on goal by the Courage (1-4-0, 3 points), who outshot the Freedom 13-10 in the rematch of last year's WUSA championship game.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Marinette Pichon scored two goals as Philadelphia won for the first time this season. Pichon connected in the 60th and 81st minutes for Philadelphia (1-4). Hope Solo made her WUSA debut in goal for the Charge, allowing only Joey Peters' goal in second-half injury time.

ATLANTA -- Conny Pohlers' first WUSA goal won it. It was the sixth goal allowed by San Jose's LaKeysia Beene, who played 46 minutes for the U.S. National team's earlier in the day.
