INDIANS Wedge, Shapiro evaluate season

The Tribe's manager and GM are taking the traditional 40-game inventory.
KNIGHT RIDDER NEWSPAPERS
CLEVELAND -- Traditionally, big-league clubs take stock of their rosters after 40 games.
Manager Eric Wedge and general manager Mark Shapiro have been meeting recently to talk about what has transpired and what might come next.
"Obviously, I'm not happy with the wins and losses," the manager said. "But I am happy on an individual basis, and the way we need to go about our business. One day we're going to look up, and we'll be where we want to be."
Not enough relief
Some of the participants have changed, but overall the bullpen has been a problem area from the outset of the season. "It's been suspect at best, but I've seen signs [of progress]," Wedge said. "Danys Baez and David Riske have been ramping up, and Billy Traber has done a pretty good job." And has Traber's status as a starter, long term, been altered by his performance as a reliever? "I think I look at Traber as a guy who can be a starter," the manager said. "But he's a viable option in the bullpen, too."
Injury update
Karim Garcia (sore left wrist) took batting practice Friday and might go on a rehab assignment to Buffalo next week. He probably will come off the DL on May 22.
Ricky Gutierrez played four innings in an extended spring training game and is progressing as expected. He must remain on the DL until at least May 30.
Travis Hafner (broken toe), eligible to come off the DL on May 25, will have to go on a rehab assignment before he is activated.
Makeup game
The May 1 rain-out against the Anaheim Angels has been rescheduled as a day-night, separate-admission doubleheader on Aug. 9. The originally scheduled Aug. 9 game begins at 1:05 p.m. The makeup game will start at 7:05.
Bradley-Wedge make up
Milton Bradley says things are fine and dandy between him and Wedge.
The Indians center fielder was back in the lineup Friday night after Wedge sat him down for the entire game Thursday and in the seventh inning Wednesday night.
But according to Bradley, he was not punished. And when asked if he had a problem with Wedge, Bradley responded, "Nothing happened. I didn't get benched. I haven't been benched since 'A' ball. That is just speculation."
And why didn't he play after the sixth inning on Wednesday?
"I didn't come out for the seventh inning, and Jody Gerut replaced me," Bradley said. "It was the manager's decision. I just didn't play."
Form of discipline
Despite Bradley's denials, Wedge gave every indication that Bradley's absence from the lineup was a form of discipline.
But for what? Neither Wedge nor Bradley has said, though it appears the two had words in the wake of Bradley's failure to hustle after hitting a fly ball in the sixth inning of Wednesday's game against the Mariners.
"My teammates love me, Eric loves me, and those feelings have been reciprocated," Bradley deadpanned. "We had a difference of opinion. It can happen with anybody. I don't always agree with my mom. We handled it like men, and it's over."
Bradley indicated that he was not angry with anyone.
"As far as being angry, no," he said. "There was a lot of emotion. I'm an emotional guy."
According to at least one player, Bradley spoke to his teammates after batting practice Thursday and apologized.
