BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Virginia Mancini, wife of the late Henry Mancini, will be a special guest of Geneva College at the ninth annual Henry Mancini Musical Theater Awards on Wednesday at Metheny Fieldhouse. The public is invited.
Henry Mancini graduated from Aliquippa High School in 1942 and continued his education at the Juilliard School of Music in New York before being drafted into the Army during World War II. He met "Ginny" during a concert tour in Los Angeles. The two were married at the Blessed Sacrament in Hollywood on Sept. 13, 1947.
During Mancini's life, he was nominated for 72 Grammy Awards and won 20. He was also nominated for 18 Academy Awards and won four Oscars. Mancini's best known music includes "Moon River," "Charade" and "Dear Heart."
Virginia Mancini's interest in the arts is demonstrated by her involvement with numerous boards. She is a member of the Music Board of Trustees of the Young Musicians Foundation and the Henry Mancini Institute at UCLA, and is a co-founder of the Society of Singers. Her passion for arts education brings her to Geneva College to celebrate the theatrical talent of young people in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
