FLOWER OF THE WEEK Black Magic Rose Geranium



Botanical name: Pelargonium x hortorum
Attributes: Dark, chocolate-colored foliage with a bright green edge makes a dramatic background for the vibrant rose flowers. A 2002 All America Winner for this seed-grown variety. Black Magic will bloom in 80 days. It loves the sun and cool conditions for its best show.

Bloom time: May until frost
Culture: Purchase healthy, well-grown plants with numerous flowers and buds. Plant in beds with good drainage and fertility, or in containers with other summer annuals. Remove spent flower heads and fertilize biweekly with a 10-20-30 fertilizer, for continual bloom all season. Plants may be started in February from seed to reduce expense.
Landscape tips: Dramatic effect when mixed with Victoria Blue Salvia, white Dusty Miller, Silver Lace in beds. For containers combine Black Magic Rose, Blue Wonder Scaveola, Snow Crystals Alyssum and a deep, rose-colored, sun-loving coleus.
Cost: Depending on number of plants or size of container, $3 to $12.
