DETAILS Proposed gun ban
The ordinance defines assault-type guns as semiautomatic weapons that can accept a detachable magazine with a capacity of 20 or more rounds.
Included in the ban are semiautomatic shotguns with magazine capacities of more than six rounds.
The ordinance would make it a first-degree misdemeanor, punishable by a mandatory six-month jail sentence and $1,000 fine, to possess an assault-type gun acquired after the ordinance's effective date.
Possession of guns acquired before that date would not be a crime under the ordinance, but the ordinance puts the burden of proof of prior possession on the gun owner.
Exempted from the proposed ban are .22-caliber firearms with detachable magazines with a capacity of 30 or fewer rounds.
The ordinance defines semiautomatic firearms as those that fire a single cartridge and chamber another when the trigger is pulled once. A fully automatic firearm fires a succession of cartridges when the trigger is pulled once.
