COLUMBIANA CORNER Striking it rich: It's just a dream

When oil and gas executives recently informed Columbiana County commissioners that they were about to undertake a major drilling enterprise in the county, Commissioner Jim Hoppel jokingly expressed hope the county would partake in the bonanza.
The executives had leased nearly 20,000 acres in the county on which to bore for oil and gas. Property owners get lease money and royalties when a well pays off.
Hoppel noted that the county owns about 100 acres along County Home Road in Center Township, but none of it was leased for the oil and gas enterprise.
"There's no oil there?" Hoppel quipped.
Soggy Dog Days
East Palestine officials recently said how pleased they were with Dog Days, an event held earlier this month in which volunteers pitched in to clean up the city.
One aspect of the enterprise, a creek cleanup, was hampered, however, by heavy rains that pelted the area before Dog Days and caused streams to swell.
"Instead of cleaning creeks, we could have gone whitewater rafting," city Councilman Jeff Rowland said.
