STRUTHERS -- The Canfield High baseball team reached the 20-win mark with Saturday's 4-2 victory over Boardman at Bob Cene Park.
"It's a special thing to reach 20 wins," Canfield coach Tony Ross said. "Both of our pitchers were outstanding today. Boardman is a top team that played very well. Playing Boardman gives us the type of competition to get better for next week."
Ross was referring to the Cardinals' Division II district date with Perry on Thursday at Jefferson. Canton Central Catholic and Mentor Lake Catholic are the other teams in the Jefferson District.
The Div. I Spartans (14-13) face Mayfield on Wednesday in the district at Cene Park. Austintown Fitch and Garfield Heights are the other teams in the district.
Allows two hits
Jake Wargacki (5-2) allowed just two hits and one run for Canfield during the five innings he pitched. Dan Leonard pitched the final two innings for the save.
Brett Bartholomew (3-1) started and took the loss for Boardman, going the first three innings.
Canfield scored a run in the bottom of the first inning as Brett Parks led off with a walk. He went to third on a single by Leonard, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chad Baker.
In the third inning, Leonard and Baker singled. With two out, Josh Geric drove both runners home with his second hit, a double to left-center field that gave Canfield a 3-0 lead.
"We had timely hitting," Ross said. "Geric had two nice hits today, including the double to score what turned out to be the game-winning run."
Boardman scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
The first came on a Tom Zetts sacrifice fly. Chris Russo doubled then scored on a ground out to cut the lead to 3-2.
John Virostko scored the final Canfield run all the way from first base on a Parks single with two out in the bottom of the sixth.
Tim Dewberry added two hits for Canfield.
