Canfield's Norah Gillam shines as Wittenberg softball pitcher



SPRINGFIELD -- Norah Gillam, a sophomore pitcher and infielder on the Wittenberg University softball team from Canfield High, has been selected to the All-North Coast Athletic Conference first team for the second straight year.
She also was named the Most Outstanding Player in the NCAC Tournament while making the NCAC tournament team, helping the Tigers to the title and a berth in the NCAA Division III tournament.
In the NCAC meet opener, Gillam pitched a five-hitter and batted Wittenberg to a 5-2 win over Allegheny. She also pitched a five-hitter in the Tigers' 2-1 win over Denison for the NCAC championship.
Then in the NCAA tourney opener, Gillam pitched an eight-hitter in Wittenberg's 3-2 win over Cabrini. She took the loss in the third game as the Tigers were ousted by Cabrini, 10-3.
As a pitcher, Gillam led Wittenberg in wins (11-7 record), earned run average (2.73), strikeouts 78 and innings pitched 113.0.
In batting, she had a .303 average with 37-for-122, 23 RBIs and 10 runs scored; while on defense, she had a .979 fielding percentage.
Last year as a freshman, Gillam was selected as the NCAC Newcomer of the Year, and made the all-region second team.
A criminology major, she is the daughter of Marcy and Jim Gillam.
