PENNSYLVANIA
Information sought in several eagle cases
Matt Hough, Pennsylvania Game Commission Southwest Region director, reported that the agency is seeking information on the illegal shooting of a mature bald eagle in Westmoreland County. Hough noted that Wildlife Conservation Officer Gary Toward is investigating this incident, and is asking the public for information about the person or persons responsible.
The injured eagle was found in the Bell Township area by a local resident who reported the incident to the Game Commission. The concerned citizen also reported seeing the eagle's mate flying overhead. The caller later accompanied WCOs Gary Toward and Tom Fazi as they recovered the bird.
The injured eagle was taken to Tamarack Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Crawford County. This wildlife rehabilitation center has extensive experience working with eagles. After a physical examination, including X-rays of the bird, it was revealed that the bird had been shot. WCO Toward immediately began a criminal investigation.
"Fortunately, in this case, the rehabilitation center is cautiously optimistic that the bird will not only survive, but it will also recover enough to be released back into the wild at the capture site," Toward said. "This fact became even more important following the discovery of an active nest site not far from where the bird was found."
"I am asking the public for help. If anyone knows or hears anything about this illegal shooting, they can call our regional office toll free at 1-(877) 877-7137. I will be grateful for any and all assistance. Any information we do receive will be held in the strictest confidence."
Hough noted that the agency also is investigating the death of another bald eagle in a nest along the Allegheny River in Perry Township, Armstrong County.
Hough said that anyone with information about these cases is encouraged to contact (877) 877-7137.
Addtionally, Larry P. Miller, 61, and his son, Michael T. Miller, 30, both of Pennsburg, Montgomery County, have been charged by the PGC for entering a posted restricted area on their all-terrain vehicles and disturbing a bald eagle nest at the Green Lane reservoir at Green Lane County Park. They each face fines of up to $3,400, possible six months in prison, and loss of hunting and furtaking privileges for several years.
Fish for free days
Fish for Free Days allows anyone to fish legally in Pennsylvania. This year, no fishing license is needed to fish on Pennsylvania's waterways all day Saturday and June 7. All other fishing regulations still apply.
