COLLEGE BASEBALL-SOFTBALL Local standouts highlight Hiram College season

HIRAM -- Dom Yazbek, a senior designated hitter and pitcher for the Hiram College baseball team this year, broke the school record for career home runs with 18.
Yazbek, a Chaney High graduate, hit his 18th homer recently in Hiram's 15-5 win over Grove City College. That surpassed the previous school record, shared by Brian Frasco (Ursuline) and Joe Lisko (Columbiana), and gave Yazbek nine for the year. He went 2-for-4 in that game with three RBIs and four runs scored.
Yazbek led the team in RBIs this season with 36, and ranked No. 4 in batting with .344 (44-for-128). He also had a 5-1 pitching record. Yazbek was one of several Youngstown-area standouts for Hiram, which posted a 21-16 record, including 9-7 in the NCAC.
Marzano, DeLisio 1-2
Joe Marzano (Cardinal Mooney), a junior outfielder and pitcher, led the Terriers in batting (.402, 41-for-102), slugging percentage (.833), home runs (11), total bases (85) and doubles (9).
Matt Ruby (Jackson-Milton), a senior pitcher, won his second straight start with a complete-game, eight-hitter in Hiram's season-ending 7-2 win over Baldwin-Wallace. He struck out four, walked two and improved to a 3-1 record.
Dante DeLisio (Cardinal Mooney), a sophomore first baseman, went 4-for-4 in the win over Grove City to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. During his streak, he batted .571 (24-for-42), including four doubles, with 12 RBIs.
DeLisio wound up as the team's No. 2 hitter (.390, 39-for-100).
Himes hits .385
Evan Himes (Mathews), a senior outfielder and catcher, went 4-for-5 in the last two games to finish at .385 (15-for-39).
John Prejsnar (New Castle), a sophomore pitcher, led the team in ERA (4.88) and had a 3-2 record.
Jeff Nastase (Poland), a sophomore pitcher, posted the most wins on the team with a 6-3 record.
Derek Stanton (Warren JFK), a sophomore infielder, batted .263 (25-for-95).
Melfi sets Hiram marks
Jen Melfi and Amanda Weigand were two of the top players on the Hiram softball team this season.
Melfi (Girard), a sophomore pitcher, set two school records with 22 complete games and 148 1/3 innings. She also became No. 2 at the school with eight wins for a season (8-16 record). She had a 3.81 ERA and pitched two shutouts.
Weigand (LaBrae), a sophomore center fielder, shared the team lead in runs scored (14) while batting .300 with 24 hits. Weigand also helped Hiram lead the NCAC in stolen bases with 51, contributing nine to tie for third in the league.
Hiram, coached by Susan Woodford of Girard, posted an 8-24 record, including 3-11 in the NCAC.
