Organ recital
WASHINGTON -- An organ recital will be presented by Thomas Pavlechko of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Canfield, at 5 p.m. May 25 in Washington National Cathedral. He will perform works by such composers as Bach, Elgar, Reger and Widor.
He is the organist and choirmaster at the 1,700-member Calvary Episcopal Church in Memphis.
While living in the Youngstown area, Pavlechko, the son of John and Arlene Pavlechko of Canfield, served as organist at St. John Lutheran Church, Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Calvary Baptist Church and Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Graduate published
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Nathan Carlin of Portersville, Pa., a 2001 graduate of Westminster College and current graduate student at Princeton Theological Seminary, will have his research published in The Journal of Religion and Health. He has written an article titled "Abandonment, Religion, and Male Melancholia: A Psychoanalytic Study of Archpriest Avvakum's Religious Autobiography."
Avvakum's writing details his problems, which included clashes with Patriarch Nikon of the Russian church in the 1600s.
Carlin will also have articles on Avvakum and Nikon published in the 2004 edition of An Encyclopedia of Holy People.
Alba House closing
BOARDMAN -- The Society of St. Paul has announced it will close its Alba House Communications store at Southern Park Mall on May 24. The store has been in the mall for 32 years, according to the society. The society's Alba House stores at Eastwood Mall in Niles and at the St. Paul Monastery in Canfield will remain open.
Outreach program
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Jericho Project will have an outreach program and clothing giveaway from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Wick Park. Hot dogs and refreshments will be available. Call (330) 783-0117.
Meditation service
CANFIELD -- Vincent Lisi of the Youngstown Spiritual Society will present a message and meditation service at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Ursuline Education Center. The service will be offered the third Sunday of each month, with an inspirational message followed by meditation, prayer and music. Call (330) 783-0387.
Summer drive-in service
ANDOVER -- The First United Methodist Church of Andover will present drive-in services at 9:30 a.m. Sundays from May 25 to Aug. 31. The services are at a site provided by Wildwood Acres Campgrounds at state Route 7 and Marvin Road. All denominations are welcome. It's the 31st year the service has been held at its present location. The service began 40 years ago in a drive-in.
150th anniversary
NILES -- St. Stephen Church will begin celebrating its 150th anniversary with a band concert and ice cream social from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. The Canfield Community Band will perform. Donations will be taken for the concert, and ice cream will be sold.
First sermon set
YOUNGSTOWN -- Brandon J. Robinson will preach his first sermon at 5 p.m. Sunday at Everlife Worship Center. He's a recording engineer for Robinsong Productions in Youngstown, where he lives with his wife, Lillie, and his three children.
