Lakeview defeats Salem; Mooney falls to top seed
Youngstown Christian won in the ACSI tournament.
CORTLAND -- Jeremy Thompson pitched a three-hit shutout as the Lakeview High baseball team defeated Salem 7-0 in a Division II sectional championship game Thursday.
Thompson (5-2) had eight strikeouts and one walk, and threw 60 of his 81 pitches for strikes.
Phil Butch and Nate Person each had three hits for the Bulldogs (15-7) and Jim Clay added two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs.
Shawn Spalding took the loss for Salem (11-15).
Lakeview will play Marlington next Thursday at Cene Park.
Marlington 7, Mooney 0
ALLIANCE -- The Cardinals were eliminated by the state's sixth-ranked team in Div. II.
Other than Jeff Hehr's two doubles, Marlington pitcher Jeff Ruff (7-0) quieted the Mooney attack.
Mike Stanek had four hits for Marlington (22-2), while James Korlesiki, Jason Stanton and Randy Foley each added three.
Mooney's Mark Seddon took the loss.
ACSI tournament
MANSFIELD -- In the bottom of the seventh inning, with one out and the bases loaded, Chris Suszczski was walked home with the winning run as Youngstown Christian edged Toledo Emmanuel 2-1 in the Association of Christian Schools International tournament at Mansfield Academy.
Justin Sargent scattered seven hits as he pitched a complete game to pick up the win. Sargent also hit a pair of singles to pace the Eagles (13-4).
The Eagles will try to defend their state title when they go against Columbus Evangel Monday at noon.
