Fireworks injuries last year didn't influence his decision, the mayor said.

HUBBARD -- Lack of interest has caused Mayor George Praznik to pull the plug on the annual Hubbard Founders Day celebration.
"We just can't get any support," said Praznik, who worked with his wife, Nancy, to stage the celebration.
It had been scheduled this year for July 12 at Harding Park.
Praznik said Thursday that the fireworks explosion that injured 14 spectators at last year's event did not play a role in his decision.
Fireworks "would have made me feel uncomfortable. If the people wanted it, we would have it," Praznik asserted.
As the result of the fireworks injuries, Van E. Burnett, owner of Burnett Display Co. in Ravenna, was sentenced to 60 days in jail. He also was fined $2,000, placed on two years' probation and had his state exhibitor's license revoked permanently.
The mayor said the lack of offers of help "tells us something. They must not want it."
The community once celebrated with Hubbard Homecoming, the mayor explained, but it fizzled out.
Revived celebration
About four or five years ago, the Prazniks renewed the summer celebration with Founders Day.
"It was a nice affair," Praznik said, adding it drew hundreds to buy concessions and watch the entertainment and fireworks.
The mayor said it takes about 25 dedicated volunteers to put on the event. "They just don't want to get involved," he added.
The Hubbard Area Chamber of Commerce will continue to hold its breakfast and fund-raising run July 12 at Harding Park.
Mary Ann Lark, chamber president, said the breakfast will be from 7 to 11 a.m. The cost is $5; $2.50 for those running.
Lark said two groups had contacted her about perhaps sponsoring Founders Day, but they haven't committed after being told they must have liability insurance, set up lights and clean up.
"To do this, you really need the city manpower," Lark said.
