AROUND THE HORN Thursday's other games

AMERICAN LEAGUE
Royals 9, Twins 5, 14 innings
MINNEAPOLIS -- Joe Randa started a four-run 14th inning with a leadoff double. Raul Ibanez hit a looping single to score Randa. Ken Harvey added a sacrifice fly and Desi Relaford and Angel Berroa followed with bloop RBI singles. Carlos Beltran hit a two-run homer in the first inning for the Royals. Cristian Guzman went 4-for-7 for the Twins, who stranded 13 runners.
Devil Rays 9, Blue Jays 5
TORONTO -- Toby Hall's two-run double and Rocco Baldelli's two-run single highlighted a six-run second inning for Tampa Bay. Jared Sandberg added a two-run double. Vernon Wells homered for the Blue Jays.
Yankees 10, Angels 4
NEW YORK -- Todd Zeile, playing first base for the first time this year, homered, singled on a pitchout and made a tumbling catch on a foul pop. Alfonso Soriano, in a 1-for-20 skid, hit a leadoff homer off Aaron Sele (1-1). Derek Jeter doubled twice, Bernie Williams hit a pair of RBI singles and Raul Mondesi scored two runs as the Yankees took a 10-1 lead after four innings.
Red Sox 12, Rangers 3
BOSTON -- Pedro Martinez (4-2) allowed five hits in six shutout innings and David Ortiz was 3-for-5 with two RBIs as Boston completed a three-game sweep. Only one runner reached third base against Martinez. Boston scored two in the third when Nomar Garciaparra's popup fell in front of right fielder Carl Everett and bounced past him for a triple.
Athletics 11, Tigers 2
DETROIT -- Eric Byrnes hit a three-run triple in a six-run first and Barry Zito (6-3) gave up two runs -- one earned -- four hits and one walk in six innings. Adam Bernero (0-6) gave up eight runs, eight hits and three walks in 31/3 innings.
White Sox 8, Orioles 2
CHICAGO -- Bartolo Colon allowed five hits before he was ejected in the ninth inning, and Magglio Ordonez keyed a six-run seventh with a bases-loaded triple for Chicago. Frank Thomas homered, singled and drew a key bases-loaded walk to force in the go-ahead run in the seventh. Colon (4-3) walked one and struck out five and was on his way to a complete game before he hit Jerry Hairston with a pitch to start the ninth. Plate umpire Terry Craft had warned both dugouts in the eighth after Baltimore reliever Jorge Julio hit Ordonez in the back with a pitch, so Colon was tossed when he plunked Hairston.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Cubs 4, Brewers 2, 17 innings
MILWAUKEE -- Corey Patterson hit a two-run homer off Brooks Kieschnick in the 17th inning to give Chicago a four-game sweep. The Brewers set an NL record for strikeouts in an extra-inning game with 24, two more than the previous mark, set by the New York Mets on May 31, 1964, and tied by Cincinnati on Aug. 8, 1972. Kyle Farnsworth (2-0) pitched three innings for the win, and Todd Wellenmeyer struck out the side for a save in his major league debut. Wood fanned 13 in seven innings. It was the second-longest game in the majors this season. St. Louis beat Florida 7-6 in 20 innings on April 27.
Cardinals 6, Reds 3
ST. LOUIS -- Garrett Stephenson (3-2) allowed two hits through seven innings and Edgar Renteria's RBI double woke up St. Louis' slumbering offense. Jim Edmonds hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals, who avoided being swept by Cincinnati for the second time in two weeks. Renteria's hit off John Riedling (0-2) snapped a seventh-inning tie. Adam Dunn hit his 14th homer for Cincinnati.
Braves 15, Padres 6
SAN DIEGO -- Julio Franco's two-run triple highlighted an eight-run fifth inning for Atlanta. There was a scary moment when the Padres' Ryan Klesko was beaned by rookie left-hander Horacio Ramirez (3-2) leading off the fifth. Klesko was knocked to the ground after getting hit near the right ear flap on his batting helmet. Andruw Jones and Marcus Giles homered for Atlanta.
Phillies 6, Diamondbacks 4
PHILADELPHIA -- David Bell hit a go-ahead double in Philadelphia's three-run seventh inning. Bobby Abreu and Ricky Ledee hit solo home runs for the Phillies, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Matt Williams and Chad Moeller homered for Arizona, which had won three straight.
Giants 11, Mets 3
SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds homered, and Marquis Grissom homered and drove in four runs as San Francisco ended its longest losing streak in four years. Mets left-hander Al Leiter (4-2) had his worst start ever, allowing a career-high 10 runs and 13 hits in 42/3 innings. He walked two and struck out three. The Giants stopped a five-game slide, their longest since an eight-game losing streak from May 12-20, 2000, thanks in part to a six-run fifth inning that was highlighted by Grissom's three-run homer. Kirk Rueter (4-1) allowed three runs on five hits in seven innings.
Rockies 4, Expos 2
DENVER -- Greg Norton and Ronnie Belliard each had RBI singles, and Colorado scored four runs with two outs in the sixth inning. Vladimir Guerrero hit his eighth homer of the season for Montreal, which lost for just the third time in 10 games. Montreal reliever T.J. Tucker (0-1) gave up all four runs. Todd Jones (1-1) replaced Colorado starter Jason Jennings in the fifth inning after the second rain delay, and allowed two hits in two innings. Jose Jimenez pitched a perfect ninth for his 11th save in 12 chances.
