Policed say Hermitage gunman tried to kill former girlfriend

SHARON, Pa. -- Police arrested John O. Kirby, 25, of Bolde Drive, Hermitage, on attempted homicide and other criminal charges after a disturbance in the 100 block of Sherman Avenue around 2 a.m. today.
Police said Kirby is accused of stalking and threatening to kill a former girlfriend who lives on Sherman and showed up at her home armed with a handgun, police said.
The 24-year-old woman lives with her parents, and her father intervened when Kirby tried to get into the house, police said.
Police were called, and Kirby fled, but he came back a short time later while an officer was still there. Police said he charged at the officer, who had drawn his gun and ordered Kirby to get down on the ground.
Kirby wasn't carrying a gun at that point and struggled with the officer, who subdued him.
Police secured a search warrant for his vehicle and said they found a loaded .25- caliber semiautomatic pistol hidden in the rear.
Kirby was held for arraignment on charges of attempted homicide, carrying a firearm without a license, making terroristic threats, simple assault, resisting arrest and stalking.
Police said Kirby had also been at the victim's home early Wednesday threatening to kill her, police said.
