HANOVERTON -- Michael Simpson and Jay Yorty came up big as Lisbon High defeated United 3-1 in a Division III sectional baseball game Wednesday.
The victory, Lisbon's second in three games against the Eagles this season, gave the Blue Devils their first sectional title in eight years.
With the score tied at 1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Lisbon's Trevor McMillian walked. United coach Rick Mulinax pulled starting pitcher Travis Boyle (5-3) in favor of Jason Sidwell.
Simpson homers
Sidwell struck out the next batter, but Simpson, previously 0-for-2 at the plate, crushed a fastball deep to right for a home run, his second of the season.
"I was going for the home run," said Simpson.
Corey Manfull's homer had tied the score in the top of the sixth.
Manfull's blast, like Simpson's an opposite-field shot, came on an 0-2 fastball and was the only mistake pitcher Jay Yorty made.
Yorty (7-4), who struck out 16, "That pitch was a mistake on my part. With the count 0-and-2, I should have been further up in the strike zone."
Yorty, who threw a no-hitter in his last start, has won both Lisbon tournament games, the previous one coming in relief.
His 16 strikeouts were a personal-high this year and nearly equaled a career-best 17.
Everyone in United's lineup, except Manfull, struck out at least once as Yorty struck out two or more batters in every inning but the seventh.
Tenth straight win
Lisbon (15-7) has won 10 straight after starting the season 1-4.
"It looks like we're peaking at the right time," said Lisbon coach Ron Witman. "That's the same for Yorty.
"He's been pitching his best lately and today he really had his stuff."
The Blue Devils' first run came when leadoff batter Jacob Wycoff walked and stole second and third. He scored on the game's only error, a bad throw into left field.
