MINNEAPOLIS -- Rick Reed pitched a three-hitter and Doug Mientkiewicz, a Gold Glove first baseman, made his first career start in right field and was 3-for-5 with two doubles, a run and an RBI. Twins DH Matthew LeCroy left the game with a broken nose when he was hit in the face by a fastball from Runelvys Hernandez (4-3) leading off the fourth inning.
Angels 5, Yankees 3
NEW YORK -- Troy Glaus doubled home the go-ahead run off David Wells in a three-run eighth inning and Scott Spiezio was 4-for-4. Garret Anderson had three hits for the Angels. New York, which wasted a 2-0 lead, has lost three of five games to Anaheim this season. Derek Jeter, in his second game back after missing six weeks with a separated left shoulder, was 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Wells (5-1) lost for the first time in 12 starts since last Sept. 1.
Red Sox 7, Rangers 1
BOSTON -- Nomar Garciaparra hit a two-run homer to extend his hitting streak to 15 games. David Ortiz also drove in two runs as the Red Sox, with the help of eight walks and three wild pitches, won for the fifth time in seven games.
Tigers 2, Athletics 1
DETROIT -- Steve Avery earned his first major league win in four years, and Brandon Inge hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth. Avery (1-0) came in with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth and struck out Scott Hatteberg to end the inning.
Blue Jays 7, Devil Rays 6
TORONTO -- Cory Lidle won his fifth straight decision. Greg Myers homered and drove in three runs for the Blue Jays, who almost blew a 7-2 lead. He went 3-for-3 with a walk.
White Sox 5, Orioles 1
CHICAGO -- Frank Thomas homered and had two RBIs, and Sandy Alomar Jr. drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. Thomas went 3-for-4, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Jose Valentin also had two RBIs for the White Sox, who have won three of four. Baltimore has lost four straight.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Reds 4, Cardinals 0
ST. LOUIS -- Danny Graves threw a four-hitter in his first career complete game and Ken Griffey Jr. scored twice in his return to the starting lineup. Griffey made his first start since dislocating his right shoulder on April 5 and was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. Austin Kearns homered for the second straight game and had four RBIs for the Reds. The Cardinals got only two runners in scoring position against Graves (3-2), who struck out one and walked one in beating St. Louis for the second straight start.
Diamondbacks 2, Phillies 0
PHILADELPHIA -- Curt Schilling pitched a two-hitter for his second consecutive shutout. Schilling (3-2) struck out 14 -- all swinging -- and walked just one. Alex Cintron hit his first major league homer and Luis Gonzalez had an RBI single for Arizona, which has won six of eight. The Phillies have lost three straight.
Rockies 6, Mets 5
DENVER -- Chris Stynes hit a tie-breaking RBI single in the eighth inning and Larry Walker hit a two-run single in a five-run fifth. Mike Piazza hit his third homer in the past two days for New York.
Expos 6, Giants 3
SAN FRANCISCO -- Claudio Vargas pitched into the ninth inning for his first major league victory and Montreal sent San Francisco to its fifth straight loss. Ron Calloway and Jeff Liefer homered, and Vladimir Guerrero hit a two-run single in a five-run seventh for the Expos. The 23-year-old Vargas (1-1) outpitched fellow rookie Jesse Foppert (2-3), who had won his previous two outings.
Cubs 6, Brewers 1
MILWAUKEE -- Carlos Zambrano allowed three hits in eight innings, and Troy O'Leary hit a three-run homer. The Cubs are 4-0 since Sammy Sosa went on the disabled list. Milwaukee has dropped four straight. Zambrano (4-3) matched the longest outing of his career. He allowed one run, struck out seven and walked one.
Dodgers 5, Braves 1
LOS ANGELES -- Kevin Brown outpitched Greg Maddux to win his third straight decision, and Fred McGriff hit his 484th home run. Shawn Green hit a two-run double to help hand the NL East-leading Braves only their fifth loss in 28 games. Maddux (3-5) allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings. It was the first time he faced Brown since May 30, 1999.
Marlins 10, Padres 3
SAN DIEGO -- Brian Banks connected for a three-run homer and drove in four runs. Rookie Dontrelle Willis (1-0) pitched five innings for his first big league win. Banks, who came in batting just .139, went 3-for-5 for his first multihit game of the season and finished a double short of the cycle. Mike Lowell also hit a three-run homer and Derrek Lee a solo shot. Juan Encarnacion had four singles and reached base five times, and Juan Pierre had three hits.
