BOARDMAN -- Ten Mahoning County residents have thrown their name into the ring to fill a vacancy on the Mahoning County Educational Service Center governing board.
They are Susan Baker of Canfield, Kathryn Banks of Boardman, Cynthia Christani of Sebring, John Grahovac of Poland, George Houk of New Springfield, Richard Lotze of North Lima, David Moore of Canfield, James Vivo of Boardman, Kathi McNabb Welsh of Boardman and Karen Wilson of Poland.
The board vacancy was created by the death of Pat Vivo, who had served since January 1986. Board members will interview candidates and appoint a replacement in early June.
Paving contract awarded
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County commissioners awarded a $695,644 contract Thursday to Northern Ohio Paving of Twinsburg for summer paving projects.
County Engineer Richard Marsico said the company will pave about 12 miles of county roads, paid for with revenue from a county sales tax. Paving will affect roads in eight townships. Small bridges on Baird Road in Springfield Township and Crory Road in Canfield Township will be replaced.
Shootings leave 2 injured
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two men wounded late Thursday night in separate shootings were in stable condition today at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Ivan Hasley, no age given, of East Auburndale Avenue was shot in the neck, left arm and left thigh during an argument over 50 cents at his South Side home at 11:20 p.m., reports show. Police have a description of the man Hasley argued with.
Gerald Brown, 40, of Neilson Avenue was shot in the left thigh and right buttock when he approached two men on McGuffey Road on the East Side at 11:50 p.m., reports show. As of this morning, no arrests had been made.
Charged with loitering
YOUNGSTOWN -- Vice cops checking the North Side for prostitution activity Thursday night issued citations to Gregory Carter, 53, of Superior Street and Tracie Wallace, 33, of Delaware Avenue. Both are charged with loitering to engage in solicitation.
Police said they saw Carter drive slowly past Wallace several times on Madison Avenue at Covington Street, where she was flagging down cars. When Wallace got into Carter's car, police pursued it and pulled it over on Foster Street about 8 p.m.
82-year-old charged
YOUNGSTOWN -- Stephen R. Budrovic, 82, of Brittain Street may be required to take a driver's exam, based on police questioning his ability to drive after a series of hit-skips Thursday afternoon on the South Side.
Budrovic's car struck another car on Beechwood Place at East Judson Avenue, backed up, hit the same car again and, while attempting to flee, struck a utility pole. Budrovic then ended up in the parking lot of Animal Charity on South Avenue, where witnesses blocked his exit until police arrived, reports show.
Police cited Budrovic for failure to have assured clear distance, leaving the scene of a crash on streets, improper backing and leaving the scene of a crash involving realty. Police took him home and had his car towed pending his driving evaluation.
Grant application OK'd
STRUTHERS -- The Ohio Public Works Commission has approved the city's grant application for improvements to the waste treatment plant trickling filters. According to Mayor Dan Mamula, the city can proceed with the preparation of plans and specifications.
The estimated project cost is $500,000. The grant will fund 61 percent of the cost; Mahoning County and the city will fund the rest.
Man dies in one-car crash
LIBERTY -- The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a one-car crash that killed a 23-year-old Warren man. Reports say Brian Koehn, of West Gate Drive, Warren, was driving west on Tibbetts-Wick Road around 1 a.m. today when he lost control of his vehicle. Koehn's vehicle went off the side of the road and struck a mailbox and utility pole, reports state.
CPR class offered
NEW SPRINGFIELD -- A cardiopulmonary resuscitation class will be offered at the Springfield Township Municipal Building at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The cost is $15 to cover books. Karen Philibin and Phil Goings of the township EMS squad will teach the class, which is open to residents of the township and of New Middletown.
