YANKEES Angels win despite Jeter's return
NEW YORK (AP) -- Derek Jeter's return to the lineup made the New York Yankees whole for the first time since last season.
With Scott Spiezio driving in big runs and John Lackey pitching under control, the Anaheim Angels played the same way they did last October.
Spiezio spoiled Jeter's return from the disabled list by hitting a grand slam and a solo homer to back Lackey's strong pitching and hand Mike Mussina his first loss of the season in Anaheim's 10-3 win Tuesday night.
"Tonight we played our ballgame," Angels shortstop David Eckstein said. "Top to bottom, we were tough outs at the plate and put pressure on them. John Lackey looked awesome. He was very poised, very confident."
Jeter went 1-for-4 in his first game after missing six weeks with a dislocated left shoulder. He was cheered during batting practice and when he ran on the field to loosen up before the game.
He got the loudest ovation during pregame introductions and received a lengthy standing ovation before fouling out in the first inning.
"I feel fine," he said. "I got good pitches to hit. I just got under them. The first at-bat I was a little nervous. I got out in front and popped the ball up."
The Yankees did quite well without Jeter, going 25-11 while he was sidelined. But the five-time All-Star and leader of a team that won four World Series in his first five seasons was missed.
"I think he solidifies what we do," manager Joe Torre said. "He pretty much sets the tone for what we do and how we play the game."
Jeter was no help against the Angels, who looked as powerful as they did last October when they beat the Yankees in the first round on the way to their first World Series title in franchise history.
