STRUTHERS -- When you get great pitching, timely hitting and good defense, you can win tournament baseball games.
The Campbell Memorial High baseball team got all three Tuesday as the Red Devils defeated Springfield 9-1 in a Division III Sectional Championship game at Bob Cene Park.
The Red Devils (12-7-1) will play the winner of today's Lisbon-United game at Monday's district tournament at Cene Park.
Jason Metzka (5-2) struck out a career-high 14 batters in a complete-game two-hitter. The Tigers' only run was unearned.
"I love throwing in the cold weather," Metzka said. "When they had their chances, I just tried to throw harder. Our defense is coming around. They made the plays when I did not."
Added Campbell coach Wayne Zetts, "He's been throwing the ball real well. This was his fourth straight good outing for us."
Zembillas' lead way
Junior Anthony S. Zembillas had two singles and two RBIs, while his cousin, Anthony T. Zembillas, added a two-run double.
& quot; They have been hitting the ball well," Zetts said of the two cousins. "They have been carrying the team lately."
Campbell took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Justin Vrona singled and Anthony Rossodivita followed with an RBI double.
In the third, Lonnie McQueen hit a leadoff single and stole second and Anthony S. Zembillas hit an RBI single.
Mark Such followed with a single and advanced to second on the throw. The younger Zembillas followed with a two-run double to give the Red Devils a 4-0 lead.
Metzka retired the first six batters -- the last five on strikeouts -- but walked Melio Rios to start the bottom of the third. Rios stole second and scored on a two-out error.
Campbell added three runs in the fourth when Rossodivita was hit, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on an error. McQueen bunted and stole second and drove in Louie Samonas, who reached on the error. Zembillas had an RBI single to score McQueen.
McQueen, a freshman, had three hits and Vrona added two hits.
Chase Dobson (3-3) took the loss for Springfield (8-13). Dom Fiumara and Dan Schuler each had a hit.
