Farrell girls score a big win with song
FARRELL, Pa. -- Six Farrell High School girls have won themselves a trip to Los Angeles as well as a free concert by recording artist Jhene and $1,000 cash for their school in a song-writing contest.
The girls, Patricia West, TaKeshia Richardson, Tayonia Robinson, Tenishia Major, Sonya Tubbs and LaShawntere Brown read about the nationwide contest, "Jostens Rock the Halls," in Teen People magazine and spent four months writing lyrics for an original school song which they performed and videotaped, using the entire school body in a pep rally setting.
Jostens, with headquarters in Minneapolis, is a producer of yearbooks, class rings, graduation products, school photography and products for athletic teams and their fans.
"Out of all contest entries that were submitted from schools across the country, Farrell High School best captured the essence of school spirit," said Tim Larson, Jostens' vice president of marketing.
"The six students engaged the entire school in the performance of their song, with bleachers full of kids waving pompons and cheering."
The concert by Jhene, who is touring the country this summer with the band B2K as part of the Scream III Tour, is set for 1:30 p.m. May 30 in the high-school auditorium.
It will be open only to Farrell High School's 450 students, said Superintendent Richard Rubano.
The six girls and their chaperones will be flown by Jostens to Los Angeles on June 6 to visit the set of a B2K movie, "You Got Served."
The $1,000 cash prize will be used for a teacher award and to supplement the high-school fine arts program, Rubano said.
