CRAIG BEACH Groups plan to participate in 5th annual Safety Break
Health screenings and severe weather information will be available.
CRAIG BEACH -- More than 20 local agencies and organizations will participate in Craig Beach's fifth annual Safety Break at the Lake event from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the volunteer fire station, 1797 Grandview Road.
The program will begin with a medical helicopter landing at 1 p.m. People will be able to see how the helicopter works, what kind of equipment is used and how a person being airlifted to a hospital is prepared.
Participants will include Craig Beach and Milton Township police departments, who will be on hand to offer fingerprinting and photo-taking for children.
People who suffer from Alzheimer's disease also can be fingerprinted. The process can help track and identify those with the disease if they are in a dangerous situation, said Marilyn Bartholomew, one of the organizers.
North Jackson firefighters will give a demonstration on how the Jaws of Life equipment is used to rescue someone trapped in a car or in other life-threatening situations.
Blood drive, screenings
Humility of Mary Health Partners will offer a blood drive and the donated blood will stay in Mahoning and Trumbull counties, Bartholomew said.
Cholesterol and glucose screenings also will be offered for $5 each, and doctors will perform eye testing for glaucoma and do free stress and spinal screenings.
The Mahoning County Board of Health will have a table set up with information on various health services.
Tornado spotters will show what types of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms look like on a computer and will discuss what to look for and what to do when dangerous weather approaches.
Kevin Felger Sr., Craig Beach's new fire chief, also helped organize the event.
