Royals 3, Twins 2
MINNEAPOLIS -- Carlos Beltran homered and Jeremy Affeldt struck out a career-high eight in the opener of a four-game series. The Royals improved to 17-3 against division opponents and 3-0 against the Twins, who had won 10 of 12 coming in. Raul Ibanez hit a two-run single in the first inning. Beltran added a solo homer in the fifth and finished with three hits. Torii Hunter homered for the Twins, and Matthew LeCroy had an RBI double.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Cubs 11, Brewers 5
MILWAUKEE -- Moises Alou and Mark Grudzielanek each had four of Chicago's season-high 19 hits. Mark Prior (5-1) struck out 11 in six innings. Alou, Damian Miller and Troy O'Leary homered for the Cubs. The Cubs tagged Glendon Rusch (1-7) for eight runs on 13 hits in just 3 1/3 innings. Richie Sexson, Geoff Jenkins and Brooks Kieschnick homered for the Brewers.
Mets 9, Rockies 6
DENVER -- Cliff Floyd homered and drove in four runs, and Steve Trachsel (1-2) won for the first time in eight starts as New York earned its third straight victory. Roberto Alomar hit his second homer of the year and Ty Wigginton added a three-run triple for the Mets, who won for just the sixth time in 17 road games. Mike Piazza, who took grounders at first base before the game for the first time, had three hits. Preston Wilson drove in two runs and finished a triple short of the cycle for Colorado, which lost for just the fifth time in 17 home games. The Rockies have lost 14 of 19 overall.
Expos 4, Giants 3
SAN FRANCISCO -- Jose Vidro hit a three-run double in the seventh inning and Montreal beat Damian Moss (5-1). Rich Aurilia and Barry Bonds hit consecutive doubles in the ninth to cut it to 4-3, but Rocky Biddle struck out Jose Cruz Jr. and Benito Santiago for his ninth save in 10 chances. San Francisco lost its third straight.
Braves 11, Dodgers 4
LOS ANGELES -- Javy Lopez hit a three-run homer and Gary Sheffield added a two-run double in Atlanta's seven-run ninth inning. Vinny Castilla also homered for the NL East-leading Braves, who have won 22 of 26. Marcus Giles broke a 4-4 tie with an RBI single off Eric Gagne (0-1), who allowed four runs on three hits and a walk in one-third of an inning. Dodgers pinch-hitter Ron Coomer tied it with an RBI single in the seventh.
Marlins 6, Padres 1
SAN DIEGO -- Ivan Rodriguez hit a two-run homer and Todd Hollandsworth added a two-run double, making Jack McKeon 2-0 as Florida's manager. Rondell White had four hits for the Padres. Rodriguez hit his sixth homer off Clay Condrey (1-2) with two outs in the fifth to give the Marlins a 6-0 lead.
