Boardman relaysets meet record
BEDFORD -- Boardman's girls 4x800-meter relay set a meet and stadium record Saturday to lead the Spartans to a second place finish behind Cleveland Collinwood at the Bedford Relays.
The relay team of Brittany Durkin, Sarah Grabert, Jessica Moore and Monica Cuevas ran 9:27.3, which is just four seconds off the school record set at last year's state meet.
Boardman's shuttle hurdle relay team of Hayley Withrow, Allison Brager, Genna Higbee and Carrie Zorman set a school record with a time of 1:07.10. The old record of 1:07.96 was set last year by Withrow, Jenny Singleton, Brager and Zorman.
The 4x400 relay team of Moore, Liz Yazbek, Durkin and Cuevas set a school record with a time of 4:00.98, breaking the record of 4:01.3 set by Durkin, Amber Bland, Yazbek and Cuevas.
Curbstone Coachesto elect officers
The Curbstone Coaches weekly noon luncheon at Lockwood House will consist of the election of officers.
President Joe Maxin urges all members to attend this last meeting before the summer break.

STRUTHERS -- Matt Ucchino was the relief pitcher for the Cardinal Mooney High baseball team in the Cardinals' 7-4 win over Struthers Thursday in a Division II sectional tournament game at Cene Park. Ucchino has a 3-1 record. Ucchino's name was misspelled in Thursday's article on the game.
Evan Best to playat Robert Morris
COLUMBIANA -- Evan Best, a senior at Columbiana High School, will play outside linebacker on the Robert Morris University football team in the fall.
A 6-foot, 190-pound player, Best recorded 106 tackles and earned three letters with the Clippers.
He was a first-team all-NEO pick.
Oldtimers hearOhio HOF founder
YOUNGSTOWN -- Thomas Aiken, founder and president of the Ohio Baseball Hall of Fame, spoke at a recent dinner of the Youngstown Baseball Oldtimers Association.
Commendations from the Ohio Baseball Hall of Fame were made to the late Rudy Granito, Nick Granitto, Rudy Piskur, Dick Price and Ed Winsen for their contributions to baseball for more than 50 years.
Oldtimers president John Pape was presented with the organization's Man of Year Award.
Forum Health race
HOWLAND -- The Forum Health Sports Medicine 5K Race and 1 Mile Fun Run will be held May 17 at the Hillside Rehabilitation Center, 8747 Squires Lane.
The 1-mile fun run starts at 9 a.m. and the 5K race starts at 9:05 a.m.
Registration begins at 7:45 and costs $10 for pre-registered runners and $12 on race day.

Aeros' Churchhits game-winner
AKRON -- Grady Sizemore hit a two-run homer and Ryan Church drove in the game-winner as the Akron Aeros staged an eighth-inning comeback to beat Norwich 4-3 Saturday night in the Eastern League.
Pat Hallmark homered to lead off the game for the Navigators. Adam Shabala then doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a balk.
Norwich took a 3-0 lead when Michael Cervenak reached on an error by third baseman Corey Smith, then later scored on another Smith error.
Francisco Cruceta survived the rough first inning, and held Norwich scoreless through the next six innings, allowing only two more hits.
Jack Cressend (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win.
Church hit a leadoff triple and scored on an error in the seventh to make it 3-1.
Mitch Walk was dominant until the eighth inning, allowing three runs on six hits.

PITTSBURGH -- Astronaut Lt. Col. E. Michael Fincke will throw out the first pitch at Monday's Pirates-Astros game at PNC Park.
The Pittsburgh native will honor the Space Shuttle Columbia crew.
Slippery Rock splitswith Shippensburg
SLIPPERY ROCK -- Joe Pascarella, a graduate of Shenango High School, hit a grand slam in the eighth inning to give Slippery Rock a 10-7 lead as the Rock rallied from a 7-2 deficit to defeat Shippensburg 11-7 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference baseball championship series.
The Rock (44-10) lost to Shippensburg 2-0 later Saturday in the title game.
Bethany losesin NCAA tourney
NEW CONCORD -- The Bethany College softball team had its season end Saturday with a 3-2 setback by Cabrini College in the loser's bracket of the NCAA Tournament Central Regional.
Bethany is 31-8 while the Cavaliers are 34-7.
Mercer Racewaywashed out Saturday
MERCER, Pa. -- Racing scheduled for Saturday night at Mercer Raceway Park was canceled.
May 17 is the first special event of the season, the Slidewayz Dual Sprint Car Event. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. with racing at 7 p.m.

TEMECULA, Calif. -- Unbeaten Juan Diaz rallied in the last two rounds and unanimously outpointed Eleazar Contreras in their lightweight bout at the Pechanga Resort on Saturday.
In a preliminary bout, Francisco Bojado of Mexico stopped previously unbeaten William Adamyan of Glendale, Calif., at the end of the sixth round.
Stanford, UCLAadvance to final
SAN DIEGO -- Defending champion Stanford and second-seeded UCLA won easily Saturday, and will meet Sunday for the NCAA Division I women's water polo championship.
Lauren Boreta scored three goals, and Hannah Luber and Lauren Faust two each as top-seeded Stanford beat No. 4 Indiana 13-2. UCLA, seeking its sixth championship in eight years, topped No. 3 Loyola Marymount 8-2.
