COLUMBIANA CORNER Officials recognize contribution from Salem Salvation Army

The Salem Salvation Army's "World's Largest Kettle" project was recognized recently at a Salvation Army conference in Philadelphia.
The project involved the creation of a 1,100-gallon steel kettle, a giant replica of the small kettles the Salvation Army uses in its annual holiday fund-raising campaign, said Capt. Tom Hinzman, commanding officer of the Salem agency.
Once the giant kettle was made, the public and area businesses were invited to try to fill it, a move that produced abut $11,652 in donations, including some from Salem school children, Hinzman said.
At the Philadelphia conference, the organization hailed the idea as a "best practice."
