Pitcher tosses dramatic no-hitter
NEW OXFORD, Pa. (AP) -- A 17-year-old softball pitcher threw a no-hitter in her first game since the death of her father -- the team's coach.
Mollie Van Lieu, a junior at Bermudian Springs High School, threw her first career no-hitter and all nine players scored at least once in an 11-0, five-inning victory over New Oxford on Thursday.
Her father and the team's head coach, 48-year-old Phil Van Lieu, died of a heart attack May 2.
"This was definitely the hardest game I've ever played," Mollie said after the game. "I had a huge knot in my stomach, and I couldn't sleep at all last night. I was playing for my dad."
Bermudian scored seven runs in the top of the fifth and then huddled and yelled "Coach Phil!" before taking the field in the bottom half of the inning.
Phil Van Lieu was head coach of the Eagles the last two years and an assistant for several years before that.
