NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Lawrence County Youth Strings will be featured at the Beatnik Cafe at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Copernicus Room of the New Castle Public Library. They group includes violinists, cellists and pianists and will perform duets, solos and ensemble pieces.
Library Director Susan Morgan said the group represents county musicians ages 10 to 17. Many of the young musicians are pupils of Jim and Betty Stevenson, retired symphony musicians who are promoting classical music in Lawrence County through private instruction and visits to schools.
Animal cruelty case
YOUNGSTOWN -- A pretrial hearing for Lydia D. Mayfield, 31, of West LaClede Avenue has been reset to June 5 in municipal court on five counts of cruelty to animals.
Three of the counts are from May 2002 and two from last month. Bond on all five counts is $7,500, with 10 percent allowed to be paid. Aside from bond, Mayfield had to pay a $60 warrant fee for failure to appear in court on the older case, the clerk's office said.
Humorist to speak
BRISTOL -- Humorist Pat Leimbach will speak at 6:30 p.m. June 2 at Bristol Public Library. Leimbach is the author of three books, and her column, "The Country Wife," appears in a number of farm publications. No registration is required, and light refreshments will be served after the show.
Lottery sues store
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Ohio Lottery Commission is suing SOS Food Store of Canfield Road for $41,864 that the commission says it is owed for unpaid lottery tickets sold or used by the store. The suit, filed Friday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, also seeks $42,000 in punitive damages, plus 10 percent interest per year, retroactive to July 30, 1990.
Urban League career fair
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Area Urban League will sponsor a career fair from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Thursday at Hillman Middle School, 164 Hillman St. The career fair provides seventh- and eighth-graders exposure to a variety of occupations, professions and career paths. The league had a fair last week at East Middle School for more than 200 middle school pupils. More than 40 business professionals and vendors participated.

Arthritis programs
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Arthritis Foundation offers two free educational programs from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday and May 22 at St. Elizabeth Health Center, 1044 Belmont Ave. On Thursday, Dr. David Brys will discuss "Arthritis of the Knee," and on May 22, Dr. John Flauto's topic is "Arthritic Conditions of the Foot and Ankle." Park schedule
LISBON -- The Columbiana County Park District is opening its 2003 schedule with a program on the habits and history of owls at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Scenic Vista Park. The event will end with a short nature walk.
There will be a program on woods during spring from 9 to 11 a.m. next Saturday.
At 1 p.m., there will be a nature walk on the Greenway Trail starting at the Teegarden Covered Bridge. There will be a program on the area's natural history, geology and wildflowers. All the events are free.
Wildlife specialistto speak at meeting
CANFIELD -- Amanda Rodewald, Ohio State Extension wildlife specialist, will be the speaker at the May meeting of the Northeastern Ohio Forestry Association. The session will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Mill Creek Park's Experimental & amp; Educational Farm, state Route 46.
Rodewald will explain how to incorporate wildlife needs into a stewardship plan for properties. Most NEOFA members own forestland and manage it for timber and firewood, enhanced wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities.
There will be a brief business meeting and refreshments. Nonmembers are welcome.
Blair gets new term
NILES -- Atty. Matt Blair will serve another three-year term on the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District's board of directors.
Mayor Ralph Infante re-appointed Blair, who's served as one of the city's two representatives to the water district since 1998.
The term runs through May 5, 2006.
