SOFTBALL ROUNDUP Ursuline edges LaBrae on Vrabel's RBI triple



Maureen Cearfoss tossed a three-hitter in the 1-0 win.
LEAVITTSBURG -- Junior Jenna Vrabel had a run-scoring triple to lift Ursuline High over LaBrae 1-0 in the Division III sectional softball tournament Wednesday.
In the bottom of the sixth inning freshman Vanessa Dickson walked and Maureen Cearfoss bunted her to second. Vrabel then tripled in the only run the Irish (16-10) needed.
Cearfoss (14-10), a sophomore, threw a three-hitter with four strikeouts and two walks.
Mineral Ridge 4, Girard 0
MINERAL RIDGE -- Kaili Gehring (15-4) threw a one-hitter for the second-seeded Rams (19-5).
May 14 at 4:30 p.m., Ursuline will play at Mineral Ridge in the next round of the tournament. The teams split their two regular season meetings.
Sylvia Dubic had two hits for the Rams who scored three times in the fifth inning.
Chaney 14, Warren JFK 3
YOUNGSTOWN -- Justine Klopta pitched a three-hitter and Chaney had 17 hits, scoring four runs each in the first, fifth and sixth innings.
Mary Wheland hit three singles, scored three times and drove in a run for Chaney. Renee Palowitz hit a triple and two singles and scored twice, while Terra Koontz hit a double and single and drove in four runs.
Boardman 11, Fitch 1
AUSTINTOWN -- Jennifer Pancake had a homer, a double, two singles and drove in three runs, and combined with Ashley DiDomenico to throw a one-hitter.
Pancake (15-1) went the first six innings for the Spartans (20-1, 8-0 Steel Valley Conference) who are ranked first in the state.
The Falcons allowed 20 hits and are 0-8 in the SVC.
Jennifer Feret added four hits including two doubles and two RBIs while Meagan Cunningham had three doubles and Jaclyn Corroto singled three times.
Newton Falls 7, Lakeview 1
CORTLAND -- Mariah Harris tripled to lead the Tigers (16-8, 10-2 Trumbull Athletic Conference).
Brittney Bucco and Mandi Pringle each had a double for the Bulldogs (8-7, 8-5).
Alliance 3, Niles 1
NILES -- Kelly Leonard had two singles for Niles (8-12) which trailed 2-0 in the first.
