PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP Howland wins tourney opener
Vasili Pahoulis tossed a two-hitter in a 2-0 win over Ashtabula Lakeside.
HOWLAND -- Vasili Pahoulis fired a two-hitter, with seven strikeouts, as Howland High blanked Ashtabula Lakeside 2-0 Wednesday in a Division I sectional tournament game.
The Tigers will travel to Austintown Fitch next Wednesday for a sectional championship game at 4:30 p.m.
Howland (13-7) got the only run it needed in the top of the fifth inning as Craig Dobos walked, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error.
Lakeside (12-4) pitcher Dan Juhola scattered four hits and struck out 11.
Ursuline 3, Niles 0
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Irish (7-15) got the only run they needed in the bottom of the first inning.
Kevin Barry hit a double and single and drove in two runs, while Brad Borgatti hit a pair of singles and scored once.
Armand DePaul scattered five hits, with five strikeouts, to pick up the win.
Vince Gatta hit a double and single for the Red Dragons (11-11).
Mineral Ridge 7, McDonald 5
MINERAL RIDGE -- The Rams (6-16, 4-7) sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth inning as they scored five runs, which included a two-run single by Chris Broennle.
Mike Buckner and Charles Miller each had two hits.
John Camuso and Mike Van Dyke each had two hits for McDonald.
Girard 6, Hubbard 0
HUBBARD -- Don Santisi doubled and Dustin Helle had two hits for the Indians.
Girard scored three times in the first inning and three more in the seventh.

LEAVITTSBURG -- Alan Stevens homered for the Golden Flashes (14-3, 9-2 Trumbull Athletic Conference).
Champion posted two seven-run innings.
Liberty 9, Brookfield 0
LIBERTY -- Fred Battisti had a triple and a double and Joe Lopez added a double and a single for the Leopards.
The Warriors were held to four hits.

RAVENNA -- The Pirates (8-11, 4-7) were held to four hits including a double by Josh Herndon.
