HOME FIX-UPS What to watch for With spring bringing the usual rash of home improvement scams, the Better Business Bureau recommends homeowners follow these tips before settling on a contractor:

Compare costs: Solicit at least two or three bids from prospective contractors, making sure all bids are based upon the same building specifications, materials and labor.
Discuss differences: Bids may vary based upon the quality of materials and labor. The cheapest choice is not always the best.
Ask for references: If possible, visit and inspect properties where the contractor has completed projects.
Check credentials: Find out if contractor is a member of a professional association which has standards or a code of ethics for remodelers.
Check with BBB: Locally the Better Business Bureau has business reports on 8,207 member and nonmember businesses.
Check on insurance: Is the company insured against property damage, and personal liability in case of accidents. Call to verify the contractor's insurance coverage after obtaining the name of the carrier and agency.
Check regulations: Ask your state, county or city housing authority if the contractor must meet certain licensing and-or bonding requirements. If so, make sure your contractor is properly licensed and bonded.
Withhold some payment: Never pay a contractor for the entire job in advance and avoid paying in cash whenever possible.
