Council president vote
YOUNGSTOWN -- While numbers in Tuesday night's city council president election show Councilman James E. Fortune Sr. edging out current President John R. Swierz for the Democratic nomination, there are still 37 votes waiting to be counted.
Fortune, D-6th, is the unofficial winner of the primary by 16 votes -- or 0.2 of 1 percent.
However, 31 provisional votes -- from people who moved into the city 30 days before the election -- were cast at the elections board Tuesday, said Michael Sciortino, director of the Mahoning County Board of Elections. An additional six were cast at polling places.
Sciortino said officials will begin counting those votes May 19. Between now and then, they will determine if those casting the ballots live in the city.
