Creative kid honored
NILES -- A drawing by Angelene Coates, a second-grader at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, won the Creative Kids Contest. A representative of Sprint Yellow Pages presented Angelene with a framed picture of her drawing; the drawing also will be featured on the cover page of the Ohio Sprint Yellow Pages.
SCHOLARSHIPS
20 students rewarded
HUBBARD -- Twenty students have been awarded scholarships through the Richard T. Naples Sr. Education Foundation. Local winners are: Allison Backes, Megan Bartholomew, William Boyce and Amie Coonce of Hubbard High School; Brian Baughman and Christopher Ciminero of Niles McKinley High School; Justin Blanche of Niles, of John Carroll University; Joshua Conkey of McDonald, of Ursuline High School; Janeen Delgenio of Girard High School; Amy Falhamer, Julie Yanik and Nicole Yanik, all of Masury and at Mount Union College; Jessica Forrester of Hubbard, Christine Hanigosky of Niles and Erin Quilty of Niles, all at Ohio University; Michael Giampetro of Niles at Youngstown State University; Kimberly Orlando of Girard, at Kent State University; and Renee Williams of Hubbard, at Point Park College.

Chemical society honoree
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dr. Marvin Lukin, professor emeritus in the Department of Chemistry at Youngstown State University, was recently recognized for being a 50-year member of the American Chemical Society. Dr. Lukin and his wife, Judith, reside in Canfield, Ohio, where he does reading in mathematics, physics and literature.
Respiratory board leader
YOUNGSTOWN -- Janet M. Boehm of Canfield, an associate professor and director of clinical education in the respiratory care program at Youngstown State University, is serving as president-elect of the American Association for Respiratory Care Board of Directors.
She will assume the board's presidency in 2004. Boehm previously served as AARC's vice-president of external affairs and has been an active member of the organization since 1978.
University awards at YSU
YOUNGSTOWN -- Several Youngstown State University faculty and staff members have received university awards.
J. Douglas Faires of Pulaski, Pa., and Nathan Ritchey of Sharon, Pa., faculty members in the department of mathematics and statistics, have received the Provost's Award of Merit.
Faires, the primary honors calculus instructor since 1983, was recognized for his long-term contributions to the honors program. Ritchey, chairman of the mathematics and statistics department, was honored for his role of enhancing and expanding honors programs.
Receiving the 2003 University Honors Professor Award is John White, chairman of the department of sociology and anthropology.
Dr. Janet E. DelBene of Howland, chemistry professor emeritus, and Joseph F. Malmisur of Youngstown, former director of intercollegiate athletics, received the Heritage Award.
Distinguished Service Awards went to Amy L. Cossentino, honors program; Kathleen A. Ferguson, human resources; Karen S. Green, president's office; Raymond E. Hoff, chemistry; Carol A. Kordupel, human resources; Anne Lally, counseling center; Sharon A. Mika, undergraduate admissions; Vincent Sacco, facilities; Sandra J. Stanhope, computer services; and Richard M. White, facilities.
