Device that disposesof needles OK'd by FDA
BERLIN CENTER -- The Food and Drug Administration has approved the sale of a device that disposes of hypodermic needles. Disintegrator PRO is made by Safeguard Medical Devices of Cleveland and distributed by Perfecta Products of Berlin Center, which also distributes Zim's Crack Creme.
The small electrical device creates a plasma arc that disintegrates a needle, leaving a blunted end. It heats the used needle to 1,700 degrees in less than three seconds, destroying viruses and bacteria, Safeguard Medial Devices said. It will be sold for use by health-care workers.
The FDA recently approved another Safeguard product, the Disintegrator Plus, which is sold to diabetic patients and others who use needles at home.
