The Winston Cup driver's injuries don't include a fractured skull.

The status of Winston Cup driver Jerry Nadeau was upgraded from critical to serious but stable Monday.
He remains in intensive care at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond, Va. He was injured in a crash during practice Friday at Richmond International Raceway.
Contrary to what a source told the Hartford Courant on Saturday, doctors said Monday that Nadeau's head injuries don't include a skull fracture. Doctors still haven't revealed details of the head injuries.
Responding
David Ferroni, who handles public relations for Nadeau said doctors have informed him Nadeau isn't in a coma and isn't being sedated. Ferroni said doctors told him: 'He's awake, he is responding to the environment and processing information.'
Ferroni confirmed that Nadeau has not yet spoken.
"His improvement is right on course for the injuries he sustained," Ferroni said.
Nadeau had been listed in critical condition since Friday.
The American Hospital Association defines critical as: "Vital signs are unstable and within normal limits. Patient may be unconscious. Indicators are unfavorable." Serious is defined as: "Vital signs may be unstable and not within normal limits. Patient is acutely ill. Indicators are questionable."
"It's an upgrade, and he continues improving," Ferroni said. "The vital signs are good."
Nadeau continues to be treated for what have been specified only as head, lung and rib injuries.
"We're just happy that there is encouraging news coming out," said Cherri Ridgeway, a cousin of Nadeau's from Danbury, Conn. "Right now, from what we hear, it's really just a waiting game."
Statement
A statement from Nadeau's family was released Monday by Ferroni:
