YOUNGSTOWN -- Contributions for the Patrolman Michael T. Hartzell Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 28 memorial fund can be made at any Farmers National Bank. Hartzell, 26, was shot and killed April 29, in the line of duty.
Motorcyclist is killed
WEATHERSFIELD -- A 27-year-old motorcyclist was killed Tuesday night when his cycle collided with a car on Salt Springs Road. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Gary L. Booth, of 3053 Kiwatha Road, Youngstown, was riding on Salt Springs about 10:15 p.m., near Interstate 80 when a car driven by Mary Ann Davis, 48, of 3653 Oakview Drive, Girard, tried to turn into a private driveway and the two collided. No charges have been filed.
2 men shot in minivan
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two 25-year-old West LaClede Avenue men were taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center after both were shot in the back with a handgun Tuesday afternoon as they sat in a minivan in the 400 block of Sherwood Avenue. The victims were identified as Troy Cunningham, the passenger, and Kitwan Dalton, the driver. Cunningham was in critical condition today; Dalton was released from the hospital. They told police someone emerged from a car and fired seven or eight shots into the van at 3:38 p.m. Police said they later found that car in Mill Creek Park off Falls Avenue, and two suspects were arrested.
Disorderly-conduct charge
STRUTHERS -- Police charged Michael J. Colick, 48, of Ninth Street, with disorderly conduct after neighbors and a school official complained of him shouting obscenities and walking through their yards pointing a lighted blowtorch at them. Police reports say Colick started yelling at faculty, staff and pupils at the elementary school about 8 a.m. Monday and then went into his garage. He was taken to Forum Health Northside Medical Center's psychiatric unit by ambulance. A hold was placed on him so that police can escort him to court once he is released from the hospital.
Block watch plans to meet
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Snoop Block Watch will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at Jackson Elementary School, Windsor Avenue.
Firearms indictment
PITTSBURGH -- Arian O'Connor of Youngstown has been indicted by a grand jury in Pittsburgh on a charge of violating federal firearms laws. O'Connor, 25, an inmate in Mercer County Jail, is accused of having a 9 mm handgun in his possession Sept. 27, 2002, according to the indictment. Because he is a felon, federal law prohibits him from having a firearm. He could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
Charged in bank robberies
CLEVELAND -- A federal grand jury has indicted a 40-year-old man, whose last known address was the Travelers Motel in Boardman, in three bank robberies in which a total of more than $73,000 was taken, the U.S. attorney said. George W. Penson III was charged with the armed robberies of Sky Bank in North Lima, in which $29,576 was taken March 17, and of FirstMerit Bank in Akron, in which $21,417 was taken April 4, and in the robbery of Consumers National Bank in Lisbon, in which $22,418 was taken April 10.
Driving, drug charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Robert L. Price, 26, of New Castle was charged with DUI, driving under suspension and possession of marijuana after he crashed his car into a porch at 29 McGuffey Road on Tuesday evening, police said. When asked his name, he gave his birth date. When asked again, he gave a portion of his Social Security number, police said. When asked to sign a form refusing treatment by an ambulance crew, Price wrote a phone number instead, reports show. The arresting officer said he smelled marijuana on Price and found $1,491 and a large bag of suspected marijuana in his pants pockets.
Juveniles fire paint balls
LIBERTY -- Police are determining if charges will be filed against four juveniles who fired paint balls at passing motorists over the weekend. Officers were called Sunday evening to Logangate Boulevard near the railroad tracks on complaints that paint balls were being fired at several passing cars. Police caught up with the four -- ages 12 to 14 -- who had a paint-ball gun and canister of paint balls.
