COLLEGES Kent's Hlebovy is top pitcher
Niles senior Tim Rupert will be playing basketball at Johns Hopkins this fall.
KENT -- Kent State relief pitcher Gus Hlebovy was named Mid-American East Division pitcher of the week.
Hlebovy, a junior right-hander from Campbell Memorial High, made four appearances last week, picking up a win and three saves, and compiled a 1.50 ERA in 6 innings.
He earned a non-conference victory over Youngstown State, going 3 innings and striking out five while giving up a pair of hits and an earned run.
Hlebovy then helped lock up three divisional wins over Akron by closing out each contest. In 3 innings, Hlebovy struck out three without giving up a hit.
Recruiting
NILES -- Tim Rupert, a senior at Niles McKinley High, will play basketball at Johns Hopkins University next season.
Rupert averaged 18.2 points for Niles and led the team in field goal percentage and rebounding. He shot 75% at the foul line.
Howland players commit
HOWLAND -- Quarterback Chris Settlemire and defensive back Travis Jackson, seniors at Howland High, will play football at Otterbein College next season.
Settlemire rushed for 348 yards and passed for 819 yards as a senior. Jackson led the Tigers in punt returns and also played split end.
Mount Union
ALLIANCE -- Softball players Zakiya Murphy and Candace Fredrick were named to the All-Ohio Athletic Conference team.
Murphy (.370) was named first-team as an utility player while Fredrick (.271) was a second-team pick as an outfielder.
Junior Kristi Karlen, a graduate of West Branch High, finished in the top 10 at the OAC golf tournament and earned all-league honors.
Karlen placed eighth with a 36-hole total of 186.
Slippery Rock
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The women's tennis team will compete in the 16-team national event in Orlando, Fla. Thursday.
The Rock (21-2) won twice in the regional to advance.
The Rock opens play in the national against Northwest Missouri State (22-5).
Jen Mehall set a school record in the women's pole vault with a jump of 11 feet, 3 inches, at the Indiana (Pa.) Invitational.
Mehall's winning vault also met the NCAA Division II national championship qualifying standard.
