Armed Forces Week
LORDSTOWN -- Council passed legislation urging all residents to participate in Armed Forces Week starting Saturday.
The week, which runs through May 18, is set aside to nationally recognize all armed forces personnel and veterans.
Locally, the Armed Forces Week Opening Ceremony is set for 10 a.m. Monday at Veterans Memorial Plaza at Youngstown State University.
Village officials are also recognizing military personnel with a Wall of Honor at the administration building.
Any resident with family serving in the armed forces can submit a biography and photo of the person for inclusion. Call Councilman William Dray at (330) 824-2046.
KSU commencement
CHAMPION -- Carolyn Pizzuto, vice president for human resources at Kent State University, will deliver the commencement address at 7 p.m. Friday in Lecture Hall A of the Classroom/Administration Building at KSU Trumbull Campus.
Pizzuto, who joined KSU in 2002, was founder and CEO of Management Consulting Inc., an award-winning consulting firm that focuses on human performance and systems.
Her work helped organizations maximize talents and blend them with technology. She has had business ventures across the United States, and in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
Spring cleanup
HARTFORD -- The township's annual spring cleanup will be May 17. Residents can drop off old appliances, tires and batteries at the township garage from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. or until trash bins are filled.
Freon must be removed, and no paints, oils or liquid chemicals will be accepted.
Waste disposal
BAZETTA -- Trumbull and Geauga county residents can get rid of old paint, car fluids, pesticides, propane tanks and other hard-to-dispose-of items from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 17 at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds.
A second collection will be held at the Geauga County Engineer's Yard, Merritt Road, Chardon, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 7. Both are sponsored by the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste District.
Industrial and medical waste, tires, appliances, ammunition and asbestos will not be accepted.
Bristol Library
BRISTOL -- Visitors to Bristol Public Library will be offered a look into Ohio's past at the Book Bay Cafe, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Friday through the rest of this month.
Guest speakers on local history will talk at 11 a.m., and a light lunch will be served for a donation. Registration is not required.
Road to be closed
HOWLAND -- Squires Lane will be closed about 1/4 mile west of Howland Wilson Road on Monday and May 13 as workers from the Trumbull County Engineer's Office replace a culvert.
Bridge replacement
BRACEVILLE -- Newton Falls Braceville Robinson Road will be closed one mile north of state Route 82 from Monday to June 6 as workers from the Trumbull County Engineer's office replace a bridge.
Road closing
MECCA -- Park Avenue will be closed between state Route 88 and Bristol-Champion Townline Road from May 14 to May 16 as workers from the Trumbull County Engineer's Office replace three culverts.
Man to be cited
BAZETTA -- Police say a 36-year-old Youngstown man will be cited for traveling left of center after a crash Monday morning with a tractor-trailer.
He was traveling north in a pickup truck on Bazetta Road about 7:15 a.m. when his vehicle struck a tractor-trailer driven by Donald Campbell, 42, of Atlantic Street N.W., Warren. Campbell was driving south on Bazetta Road.
Campbell wasn't injured, but the other driver was treated at St. Joseph Medical Center.
Animal sanctuary opens
BERLIN CENTER -- Noah's Lost Ark, 8424 Bedell Road, a nonprofit exotic animal rescue organization, is open for its 2003 season.
The federal and state-licensed sanctuary provides a safe haven for more than 125 animals, including more than 30 large cats. Visitors can see lions, tigers, leopards, zebras, camels and wallabies. A petting zoo is also provided for children. School groups and the general public are encouraged to visit.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and Sunday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. The Web site is www.noahslostark.org.
