YOUNGSTOWN -- The 2003 Bank One Senior Olympics of Northeast Ohio, presented by District XI Area Agency on Aging Inc., will be June 11-25 at various locations throughout the Mahoning Valley. Senior Olympics is open to men and women age 50 and older; participation is not limited to Ohio residents.
This year's events are archery, bowling, horseshoes, track and field, swimming, golf, Putt-Putt, boccie, par 3 golf and tennis.
Participants compete against others of their own age and sex for gold, silver and bronze medals.
The deadline for registration is May 23. Registration forms are available at local senior centers or from the Area Agency on Aging. For more information, call (330) 746-2938.
In addition to Bank One, sponsors for the Senior Olympics are Forum Health at Home and Youngstown State University.
Missing student is found
HUBBARD -- A 20-year-old Youngstown State University student missing three days was found by family members in Columbus.
Jennifer Duble, missing from her Hubbard home since Wednesday evening, was found shortly after midnight Saturday after she called her brother's roommate and asked for directions to his apartment.
Police reports say the roommate contacted the family and said he would make sure she didn't leave until they arrived.
Relatives, who had told police the woman is being treated for depression, drove to Columbus to retrieve her.
Expulsion hearing
LIBERTY -- A 15-year-old W.S. Guy Middle School pupil will face an expulsion hearing.
Police were called to the school at 12:30 p.m. Thursday after an administrator found a handwritten document labeled "My Hit List."
The list had the names of 30 eighth-graders and three teachers.
When questioned, the pupil acknowledged creating the list, but only as a prank.
She was immediately suspended from classes and released to the custody of her grandmother.
An expulsion hearing will be set later.
Woman reports bite
LIBERTY -- An Austintown woman told police she was bitten at a local motel by a woman she knows.
The 19-year-old Four Mile Run Road woman told police she was staying in the Knights Inn on Motor Inn Drive when she answered a knock at the door around 3:30 a.m. Sunday.
She said she was attacked by a 22-year-old Youngstown woman, with whom she's been feuding over the Youngstown woman's relationship with her estranged husband.
The Austintown woman suffered bite marks to her left arm and cheek and a torn fingernail.
No charges have been filed. The investigation continues.
Noah's Lost Ark reopens
BERLIN CENTER -- Noah's Lost Ark, 8424 Bedell Road, a nonprofit exotic animal rescue organization, has reopened for its 2003 season, which continues through Oct. 31.
The federal and state-licensed sanctuary provides a safe haven for more than 125 animals, including more than 30 large cats. Visitors can see lions, tigers, leopards, zebras, camels and wallabies. A petting zoo is also provided for children. School groups and the general public are encouraged to visit. The Web site is www.noahslostark.org.
Man assaulted, robbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 72-year-old man told police he was punched in the face and shot in his left leg during a robbery at 2 a.m. Sunday on Martin Luther King Boulevard. Robert B. Yohman of Norwood Avenue was in stable condition today at St. Elizabeth Health Center. Yohman told police he was walking near Madison Avenue when a man, dressed in brown, jumped from behind a building and attacked him. The victim said $400 was removed from his pants pocket.
Investigating beatings
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating a report that several young boys were beaten Thursday by young girls with a metal pole and a belt in the courtyard of the West-chester Square apartments.
The mother of a 12-year-old boy told police that her son and about eight other boys were in the courtyard playing at about 8 p.m. when they were approached by three young girls between ages 9-12. The girls beat the boys with the pole and belt, the mother said.
Tires slashed
SALEM -- A woman said someone slashed all the tires on her car while it was parked overnight at a business on the 300 block of South Ellsworth Avenue.
The crime was reported about 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
