FACTS, PREVENTION West Nile virus

FACTS
Most people who become infected with West Nile virus will have either no symptoms or only mild ones.
Severe cases typically affect people with weakened immune systems, and on rare occasions, infection can result in death. Symptoms include headache, high fever and stiffness about the neck.
PREVENTION
Some practical steps individuals can take to lessen their chances of being bitten and infected:
Eliminate standing water on your property.
From dusk to dawn, when mosquitoes are most active, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
Use insect repellents that contain Deet or some other form of effective ingredient. The product Skin So Soft requires more frequent applications than other types of repellents specifically for insects. Ultrasonic repellents are not effective.
Wear light-colored clothing.
