HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL J-M's Velk breaks record in sweep



Mooney and Mineral Ridge divided twin bills while Chaney faltered twice.
NORTH JACKSON -- Jackson-Milton softball pitcher Corey Velk set a school career record with her 50th victory as she won both ends of a doubleheader Saturday against Newton Falls.
In a 4-3 victory, Velk came on in relief of Ashley Shaver to pick up the win. She also doubled.
In the 6-3 triumph, Velk (17-5) scattered three hits as she pitched a complete game, with four strikeouts.
The Bluejays rallied in both contests to post the wins.
Behind 3-2 with two away in the second contest, Niki James of the Bluejays doubled. Velk walked and Erica Wilmoth singled to load the bases. Rhea Weimer walked, forcing home James.
Lindsay Johnson singled home courtesy runner Marta Carabova and Wilmoth and Weimer scored Weimer scored on an error.
Round-robin tournament
MINERAL RIDGE -- The Massillon High softball team won twice while Cardinal Mooney and Mineral Ridge split doubleheaders and Chaney lost twice in a round-robin tournament at Seaborn Field.
Mooney 19, Chaney 1
Gina Brunetti had a double, two singles and four RBIs to lead Mooney.
Kristin Laskowski had three singles and three RBIs, and Gina Fabian had three singles, one RBI and three runs scored.
Petrina Morocco, Stefanie Grimaldi and Laskowski combined to pitch a one-hitter for the Cardinals.
Chaney is 12-5.
Massillon 4, Mooney 1
Ashley Hykes pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts for Massillon.
Laura Weber had three singles for Massillon (14-5) while Shelleh Dahlquist and Nicole Offenbecher added two singles each.
Mooney is 15-8.
Mineral Ridge 10, Chaney 3
Kaili Gehring knocked in three runs -- including two with a second-inning triple -- for the Rams (17-5).
Robin Zimmerman had three singles while Sarah Stark had two. Senior pitcher Brandi McLean (2-1) had a four-hitter with eight strikeouts and three walks.
Massillon 2, Mineral Ridge 1
In Ridge's loss, Massillon's Laura Weber hit a two-run single in the top of the fifth.
In the second inning, Zimmerman's single knocked in Gehring with the Rams' lone run. Gehring doubled to get on base.
Gehring (13-4) took the loss, but not before the sophomore struck out 10 and walked five in a three-hitter.
Massillon's Ashley Hykes fanned nine, allowed only three hits and didn't issue a walk.
Struthers 6, Girard 5
STRUTHERS -- The Wildcats rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Allie Ginnetti and Holly Hickenbottom led off the seventh with singles. With one out, Ginnetti and Hickenbottom scored after three wild pitches.
Teresa Vargin walked, Annie Grischow singled and Jackie Rager, running for Vargin, scored on Meghan Kunzer's single.
Ginnetti, Hickenbottom and Michelle Zanni, who picked up the win in relief of Kunzer, each had three hits while Kunzer added two for Struthers (6-13).
For Girard (6-13), Beth Carney and Tara Morgan each had two hits. Carney and Angela DiPiero doubled.
Friday
Struthers 5, Alliance 2
ALLIANCE -- Zanni pitched a three-hitter and Hickenbottom had four hits and a RBI. Michelle High's two hits included a double. Ginnetti and Vargin also had two hits.
Alliance is 6-15.
