BASEBALL Canfield sweeps Fitch; W.B. edges Ursuline



Mineral Ridge catcher Brad Ward had four RBIs in a win over Springfield.
CANFIELD -- The Canfield High baseball team used a three-run first inning and a four-run fourth inning to upend Fitch 11-1 in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.
In the second game, the Cardinals (16-6) rallied from a 3-0 deficit to score the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 4-3 win.
In the first contest, Jake Wargacki (3-2) pitched a three-hitter as he worked a complete game with five strikeouts.
Tim Dewberry hit a double and two singles to spark the Cardinals.
In the second contest, Canfield's Mike Pulakos (1-0) came on the fifth inning and pitched three scorless for the win. His sacrifice fly drove in Frank Turocy with the deciding run.
Losing pitcher John Mang doubled for the Falcons (11-8).
West Branch 4, Ursuline 3,West Branch 3, Ursuline 2
STRUTHERS -- The Warriors (13-8) came-from-behind in both contests to prevail at Cene Park.
Trailing 3-1, West Branch rallied for three runs in the sixth inning of the first contest. Relief pitcher Nolan Swetye worked four innings to pick up the win.
Andy Todor and Steve Hilliard each had two hits for the Warriors.
Cliff Panezich doubled and singled for the Irish.
In the second game, Tad Gaspar scattered five hits as he pitched seven innings for the Warriors. Kyle Buck hurled a scoreless eighth inning to earn a save. Justin Grove hit a pair of singles.
Kevin Barry paced the Irish (5-15) with two singles. Panezich hit a triple.
Mineral Ridge 8, Springfield 4
MINERAL RIDGE -- Brad Ward hit a three-run homer and a RBI triple and the sophomore scored twice for Mineral Ridge (5-15, 3-7) in an Inter-County League game.
Brandon Linert had 10 strikeouts while limiting the Tigers to six hits.
Top hitters for Springfield (6-11, 6-7) were Dan Schuler with a three-run homer and Tim Kawecki with a solo shot.
Chaney 9, Struthers 3
YOUNGSTOWN -- Jeff Shaffo, Aaron Boris, Chris Hlinka and Dan Balog each had two hits for Chaney (18-4). One of Balog's hits was a double.
For Struthers, Bill Bowes tripled.
Mooney 8,Western Reserve Academy 7
STRUTHERS -- Mike McDermott had three hits while Jeff Hehr, Brian Drummond and Jon Grist had two apiece as the Cardinals rallied to score twice in the bottom of the seventh inning.
McDermott and Hehr doubled for Mooney while Dean Palumbaro tripled.
Youngstown Christian 10,
Wilson 0
STRUTHERS -- Patrick Bader hit a bases-loaded double to drive in three runs for Youngstown Christian (11-4).
Mike Byrdy and Chris Suszczynski had two hits apiece.
Wilson is 3-11.
