BALTIMORE -- Sidney Ponson capped a memorable week by pitching eight innings of five-hit ball Saturday, and the Baltimore Orioles beat Runelvys Hernandez and the Kansas City Royals, 6-1.
Jeff Conine homered, drove in two runs and scored twice for the Orioles, who became the first team this season to score more than three runs against Hernandez (4-1).
Ponson (3-2) struck out nine and walked one before being replaced by Kerry Ligtenberg, who completed the six-hitter.
Ponson, who threw 115 pitches, allowed only one runner past second base and did not give up a hit after the fifth inning.
The Orioles' right-hander began the week by defeating Tampa Bay on Sunday. On Tuesday, the Aruba native was decorated in his homeland as a Knight in the Order of the Dutch Royal House. Finally, Sir Sidney outpitched one of the most effective starters in baseball this season.
Hernandez came in with an AL-best 1.36 ERA and was looking to become the first Royals pitcher to open 5-0 since Bret Saberhagen in 1987. But Hernandez yielded four runs -- three earned -- and seven hits in seven innings.
Hernandez, who allowed only six earned runs in his first six starts, now has an ERA of 1.74.
The Orioles got a run in the first when Jerry Hairston walked, took third on a double by Melvin Mora and scored on a sacrifice fly by Conine.

Red Sox 9, Twins 1
BOSTON -- Pedro Martinez pitched a five-hitter and struck out 12 in his first complete game of the year.
It was the 39th complete game of Martinez's career and he finally got some support in a seven-run sixth inning capped by David Ortiz's three-run double against his former team.
In five of his other six starts, the Red Sox scored two runs or less while he was in the game. And he didn't have to worry about his bullpen blowing a lead as it did in two games in which he left while ahead.
Martinez (3-1) allowed just one earned run, giving him five games in which he permitted one or less. In the other starts he gave up two runs and 10 runs, the most in his career.
He threw 31 balls in his 108 pitches one start after he threw 31 balls in 101 pitches in a 5-4 win over Anaheim in which he struck out 10 and walked one.
On Saturday, he didn't walk a batter and went to three balls on only four.
Boston scored seven runs in the sixth, a season high. It scored six in the seventh inning Friday night for a 6-5 lead, but the bullpen failed as the Twins won 11-7.
Boston went ahead 1-0 against Rick Reed in the second on a single by Manny Ramirez, a double by Ortiz and a sacrifice fly by Trot Nixon.
Minnesota tied it in the fourth before Reed left the game in the bottom of the inning after straining his lower back, and the Red Sox reached his replacement, Tony Fiore (1-1), for a run in the fifth.
Jason Varitek singled and stole second, went to third on a flyout and scored on Todd Walker's single.
Then Boston pulled away in the sixth.

Athletics 5, Yankees 3, 10 innings
NEW YORK -- Eric Chavez hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning, and the Oakland Athletics rebounded from Jason Giambi's tying homer in the ninth to beat New York.
Tim Hudson had dominated New York for eight innings, allowing just three hits, all singles.
Keith Foulke (1-0) relieved with a 3-1 lead and blew a save for the second time in nine tries. Nick Johnson opened the ninth with an opposite-field double to left that was fair by about six inches and Giambi crushed a 3-1 pitch off the facade of the upper deck in right field.
It was just the sixth homer of the season for the former Oakland star, who has struggled and was booed following earlier at-bats. Giambi went 2-for-4 and raised his average to .200 with 18 RBIs.

Devil Rays 8, Tigers 6, 10 innings
DETROIT -- Damion Easley came back to derail Detroit, lofting a pinch-hit triple in the 10th inning.
Easley signed with Tampa Bay in early April, five days after becoming the most expensive player cut loose in baseball history. The Tigers owed him $14.3 million when he was released.
The Devil Rays blew leads of 5-1 and 6-3, but pulled the game out in the 10th. Detroit dropped their sixth in a row to fall to 3-25 this season.
Aubrey Huff, who had already homered twice, walked on four pitches to start the 10th. Travis Lee's sacrifice bunt moved pinch-hitter George Lombard to second, and the Devil Rays sent up Easley to hit for Al Martin.
Easley, who played for Detroit from 1996-2002, hit a long fly into the right-field corner and the ball bounced out of Bobby Higginson's glove as he hit the wall. Lombard, who also played for the Tigers last season, scored easily.
After an intentional walk to Toby Hall, Chris Truby, yet another member of the 2002 Tigers, hit a single through the drawn-in infield to make it 8-6.

Blue Jays 7, Angels 1
TORONTO -- Doug Davis won his first start with Toronto and Vernon Wells hit a grand slam for Toronto.
Wells drove in a career-high five runs and tied a career best for hits by going 4-for-4. The Blue Jays won their third straight game.
Davis, claimed off waivers from Texas last Wednesday, allowed eight hits in six innings for his first win since May 3, 2002, at Cleveland.
David Eckstein homered in the sixth for the only run off Davis (1-0). Davis struck out one and walked one.
The 27-year-old left-hander's effort came after Roy Halladay threw seven strong innings Thursday and Cory Lidle pitched a three-hitter on Friday. The Blue Jays entered the game with an AL-high 5.80 ERA.
Davis gave up four runs and four hits in his only start for Texas this season. He has a career record of 22-21 in 74 games, including 55 starts.
Anaheim starter Scot Shields (1-1) allowed two runs on seven hits in 5 2-3 innings.
Frank Catalanotto's sacrifice fly and Wells' RBI single gave Toronto a 2-0 lead in the third.
